DR as a gateway exporter

I would be very interested in how DR1er's feel about the President's vision of the DR as a gateway exporter to the US via the DR-CAFTA, particularly as it is reported here on the DR1 homepage today.

It worked as a gateway exporter to the US for colombian products, why not for the legal kinds?

It should work very well if the products are assembled here and exported to other countries.
A great deal will depend on whether or not Dominican industrialists will fabricate the plants for the assembly of incoming parts/raw materials, etc.
Let's hope the resavoir of capital and incentive is adequate to do just that.
