Default Are there any doer's out there...?

We went to Jarabacoa not long ago and there's a wonderful coffee plant nearby that is totally in to the organic raising of the coffee and processing of the beans. Remarkable as nothing goes to waste, they use EVERY part of the plant from the bean pod for fuel to the ashes to clean the water before it goes back in the river.

Has anyone suggested to the government of the DR to spend time in Costa Rica? For some reason they were able to get it right. The government created and maintains wonderful national parks, they have an open attitude to foreign investment and because of all of these forward thinking policies the economy is strong.

But the DR has more going for it than Costa Rica. We have wonder beaches, Costa Rica's are just so so, we have the mountains, we have a desert and we have vibrant wonderfully loving people. We should be richer than Costa Rica and Costa Rica should be envying our policies.

Is there no one out there that has the ear of the politicos and the sincerity of mother Teresa?

Are you referring to Villa Alta Gracia? Julia Alvarez's coffee farm?

I am a little unclear from your post as to exactly what you want to do here. Is this OWNED by the Government? If so, then the project can be expanded with Government funds.

My feeling though is that this is PRIVATELY owned - in which case, why involve the Government (other than to knock their performance against that of Costa Rica)? Has this organic farm done a business plan? Do the WANT to expand? If they do, wouldn't private money be more suitable? There is plenty of money around for investment IF the project is right.

If it is the organic coffee farm in Jarabacoa that I know of, someone in Santiago is already doing some marketing for them. The farm will grow more when they have the desire to push it along - until then we would be just imposing OUR will on their way of doing things! Frustrating I know, but the way to do things here!! ~ Grahame.

You're lucky you just need an Oil Change Chris!! Some of us need a de-coke (from pipe smoking), a recharged & refurbished battery, PLUS a full 'body job/refit'. I think the only part of me working overtime is the water pump!!

14 years of living here HAVE improved the 'SHOCK' absorbers though ~ Grahame.

Make that History police. I saw the mistake also but thought nobody but Nals would pick it up. Would be interested in his (Nals) take on the Public Works Program in the US would compare to a like and similar program in the DR.

I am a little unsure as to the correct interpretation of your English here RS (Read "What the H*ll does THAT mean?").

Do you wish to indicate
"Ahhhhhhhhhh, an open invitation to the person for whom this thread was created" or
"Ahhhhhhhhhh, an open invitation to the person who created this thread "?

As YOU were the person who created/initiated this thread, I presume you mean the former rather than the latter & that therefor you are requesting NALs to respond?

Now, ...... what was the original subject matter? Oh Yes, is the average working man/woman better off & happier now than either was say 2 or 3 years ago? ~ Grahame.

My bad. Thanks for the correction on which Roosevelt headed the public works project of the 1930's, unfortunately I knew that but typed Teddy by mistake. I know that Teddy was the one in the Spanish/American war and later president at the turn of the century. Sometimes I type faster than my old brain.

Re; the organic coffee plant, I was just referencing it as an example of a private company that I believe is going in the right direction. I have or had no intention other than to point out that there ARE businesses here that are forward thinking.

About Costa Rica the point was that the DR government would be wise to look at how their system is run and perhaps take bits and pieces of what works there and apply them here.

I don't think there is any debate that the future of this country depends on foreign investment and capital. The big question is; will the government change policies to make this possible and is there anyone in the KNOW that has the ears of the politicos in charge?
