DR will use it pretty much for what the Brazilians commisioned and designed it for.
I just visited wikipedia and here's what I got, ...
Quote:
The Embraer EMB 314 Super Tucano, also named ALX or A-29 is a turboprop aircraft designed for light attack, counter insurgency (COIN) and pilot training missions, incorporating modernavionics and weapons systems. It is currently in use by the air forces of Brazil and Colombia, and Embraer has plans to sell it to other countries in Asia and the Middle East. Besides pilot training, it is heavily employed in monitoring operations in the Amazon region.
Development
The request for a light attack aircraft was part of the Brazilian government's SIVAM (Amazon Monitoring System) Project. This aircraft would fly along the R-99A and R-99B aircraft currently in service and would be responsible for intercepting illegal aircraft flights and patrolling Brazil's borders.
The ALX Project was then created by the Brazilian Air Force, which was also in need of a military trainer to replace the Embraer EMB 326GB Xavante. The project of the new aircraft was suited to the Amazon region (high temperature, moisture, and precipitation; low threat). The ALX or Super Tucano (named in reference of the older Embraer EMB 312 Tucano, although it was a completely distinct aircraft) was then specified as a turboprop engine aircraft with a long range and autonomy, able to operate in night and day, in any meteorological conditions, and able to land on short airfields lacking infrastrucuture.
...
Embraer had a potential sale of 36 units to Venezuela fall through when the United States of America vetoed the sale. The US government has a say in the sale of any weapons system that utilises US technology. In this case, the Super Tucano uses a Pratt & Whitney Canada engine, and Pratt & Whitney Canada belongs to Hartford, Connecticut based United Technologies. Many other components are also of US origin.
...
Armament- 2x 12.7 mm FN Herstal M3P machine guns
- 1x 20 mm cannon pod below the fuselage
- 4x 70 mm rocket launcher pods
- Conventional and intelligent bombs
- 2x AIM-9 Sidewinder or MAA-1 Piranha or Python 3/4 air-to-air missiles
- External stores on 5 hardpoints

aegap, great info.
I did not know they would be so well equipped. Perhaps there is a desire to DO something about the drugs coming into the country. I know the USCG has no problem "splashing" small drug runner planes with their lift and jet blast, so I'd imagine the DR pilots would have even less problem in a purpose built aircraft.
Politics and corruption aside, they may make sense.

When The Dominican Airforce Pilots catch up To The Drug Smugglers...
They can wave to their friends inside the other planes!!!!!!!!
Everyone seems to think that the reason to purchase the planes is to interdict the drug traders????
Never,it's to get the "Commisions/kickbacks/payoffs on the purchase!!!
I now see that more "Busses" are part of the deal with Brazil! Why not send them right to the "junk yard" when they arrive, not within six months as is the "norm"!
These huge government purchases, construction projects, are never for the promoted reason,(DR, "NEEDS" a subway system??) but about the payoffs!!!
I can just see Fernandez,Lula, and their "cronies" smoking Dominican Cigars, drinking Rum down in Brazil, and laughing at the people in both countries who get no healthcare, education,or food!!!
Welcome to "Paradise"!!!!!!....for SOME!!!

Interesting Deal with Embraer
With a price tag of $80-90 M (USD) for a few simple planes, is it possible that there is a new Legacy 600 (Corp. Jet) hidden somewhere in the deal for the MAN, LF? It is not a G-V or 550, which he is use to traveling in, but what the heck..it's goodenuff....what say you?

As CC pointed out, the real issue is not whether these planes are actually suitable to satisfy the stated need. The main problem is that these planes will be purchased at an inflated price and through a ridiculous financing arrangement, so that a whole bunch of crooked government officials and their friends can pocket a good portion of the money.

Respected journalist Juan Bolivar Diaz wrote in Hoy yesterday (Sunday, 24 June 2007) that the Chilean's bought a similar plane for US$6.1 million this year, the same plane we are paying US$11.7 million for.
