It USED To Surprise Me ,.....
The AMOUNT of "KICKBACKS" they (Government Officials)receive when they purchase un-needed "Goods"! NO MORE!
They will pay double, even triple, the actual cost of "Things" to get "Millions" for themselves! And due to the "Trickle Down" to lower officials, and to the local officials as well,NOBODY complanes, cares,or will EVER do ANYTHING about it!!
Wait until they start to "purchase" the "Hard Goods" for the "METRO"!!! That will make the "Airplane Deal" seem like "Chump Change"!!! EVERY Administration has to have it's TWO BILLION US $$$$ Payoff before they leave power!!! Then the Next Administration will "Pardon" them! Life goes on in the DR!!!
Think what life COULD BE here if the govenment didn't steal the Nations "Future" every 4 years?????
Where do "I" get in line????

Dolores:
I pointed out, in Dominican Today commplaint column on this subject, that the particular aircraft the DR purchased for US$ 9.3 MILLION per copy were being sold WORLDWIDE for US$ 6 million.
Don't know what sort of response that wil get, but there's US$ 3.3 MILLION going into someone's pocket for each of those aircraft.
Leonel signed that contract himself, so he is bound to be the one getting the extra US$ 26.4 MILLION on the deal.
So much for his touted TRANSPARANCY in Government purchases.
Had the contract gone out for bid, Ratheon, in Dallas has an aircraft ( the Texan II )it sold to the USAF and Navy configured the same way that out-performs the Super Tucano in speed, rate of climb, service ceiling, range and payload (difference between Gross Weight and Empty Weight). A better aircraft all around and more powerful engine with the same fuel consumption.
This was a deal handled under the table. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind about that.
Texas Bill
PS: NALS, what is you comment? You're always trying to justify what the guvmnt here does.

I going to go on a limb and say this are two VERY different planes. It seems to me the Cessna CJI Plus Chile acquired has a very norrow and specific role (monitoring), while the Super Tucanos DR got are very diverse airplanes and are abe to multi-task (monitoring, intercepting, making anemy planes foce land or shooting them down /air attack, Counter insurgency ..including bombing stuff on the grown, etc)
A rough anology, on this video the Super Tucanos DR got would be more like the T-27 Tucano of the Colombians, while the Cessna Chile got would be the American plane monitoring ..American plane helping with monitoring.. ..American plane helping with monitoring..
In fact, the American plane monitoring may actually be a Cessna CJ type plane itself..

I was a Cessna piston aircratf dealer a few years ago, and was pretty familiar with the bizjets. I read the article and scratched my head.
Do they mean a CJ1? If so that's a smallish bizjet. It has no military application I'm aware of. I suppose it could track druggies, and maybe splash a small plane with it's thrust or vortexes (the way the USCG does). But they won't be shooting at anyone.
I dunno...
Embraer does have a small bizjet on the boards, the Phenom 100, in the same class as the Cessna Mustang and Eclipse 500. VLJ's (Very Light Jets).

....Amarican..helping with monitoring..
US to provide (3D) radar surveillance
Armed Forces Minister Admiral Sigfrido Pared Perez has announced that the United States government will provide the Dominican Republic with assistance with tri-dimensional radars to detect airplanes that use Dominican airspace at low altitude for illegal activities, mainly drug trafficking. This will allow the Dominican authorities to receive early warning about airplanes violating the country's airspace as well as all vessels approaching its shores, as reported by Diario Libre. The Admiral is in Key West, Florida, where discussions about the signing of a protocol with the Anti-Narcotics Intelligence Coordination Joint Command were taking place. He said that this collaboration with the US would start next week and information will be provided by radar centers in Miami and Puerto Rico that will send the data via satellite. The authorities explained that air traffic control radars installed in Dominican airports aren't able to detect low-flying aircraft. Pared Perez said that the Armed Forces are in the process of purchasing a 3D radar for use by the Air Force.

In other words, DR doesn't need no stinking Cessna CJ1 Plus w/ monitoring technology, 'cuz American have volunteered themself for that role. DR needs planes with which to intercept and, if necessary, shoot down drug flights: the Super Tucanos. |

Can the Cessna CJ1 Plus do that, ..
"This will allow the Dominican authorities to receive early warning about airplanes violating the country's airspace as well as all vessels approaching its shores"
The Super Tucano, having good air-ground attack and COIN capabilities, can also be used for close air-support to those friendly-and-fast American gifts to the Dominican Navy, or to straight-up blow speeding jets out of the water and to a full stop..
Swift boats for DR
The United States Navy has visited Santo Domingo and brought two gifts. The HSV-2 SWIFT dropped anchor in Sans Souci as part of the program to strengthen the Dominican Navy's capacity to intercept drug traffickers and illegal immigrants. The SWIFT is a high-speed catamaran, designed to provide support for smaller fast boats as well as carry out missions in its own right. The crew of the SWIFT will assist in the continued training of the new fast boat crews, who had previously received training in the United States. The fast boats are capable of speeds in excess of 70 miles per hour (60 knots), and require a highly trained crew for optimum service. The assistance program is part of Operation Lasting Friendship.

That is my personal experience approaching the DR (PoP) from the north in a piston plane. Radar coverage at lower altitudes absoultely sucks. If I turn my transponder off, I'm invisible. Not good for drug plane interdiction.

The CJ1 doesn't make sense to me either.

hopefully ,they will leave the bombs and air to air missles off this plane and just use the 12.7 machine gun. can you envision bombs and missiles falling on tourists and locals ?
