Default Corporal punishment/ caning coming to the DR?

I was in a restaurant in SDQ today where lots of powerful Dominican
"politicos" have lunch and discuss all kinds of things. As I was listening, the topic being discussed centered on sending a "trial balloon" up through legislation on the implementation of a corporal punishment "bill" for delinquency etc. here in the Dom Rep in close parameter to what is being used in Malaysia (specifically the use of caning).

The argument being discussed was that the procedures used in caning really delivers an impact in slowing down "nuisance" crime there (i.e. robbery, vandalism, and assault) and that the DR needs to start implementing more "drastic measures" to deter certain crime.

We have Great Britain to thank for implementing this form of punishment into its colonies "back in the day" and I really hope something like this does get implemented here in the DR (though I doubt it will get very far here in all actuality).

Damn Sir - are you going to be advocating 20 lashes for every bad shot on the golf course in future?? I had better get a large delivery of tar delivered to the house!!

Seriously though, in the UK violence, disrespect & unruly behaviour in the classroom has greatly increased since corporal punishment was removed & this nasty behaviour (& lack of consideration for others) has been extended into the more 'adult?' life. There are many in the UK who would welcome it's return & I am sure that introduction of corporal punishment here would quell a few 'hot headed' moments that then lead on to things that can (& do) get out of control!!

Hey, maybe Robert could start the process here?
30 lashes for calling the DR the Dominican (50 if a small 'd' is used!!)
20 lashes for calling another poster names unbecoming to DR1 language
10 lashes for posting links for advertising purposes without Robert's permission

Does anyone have other 'Naughties' they would like to see punishment by lashes for?? I joke about DR1 of course, but what level of misdemeanor do posters feel lashes MIGHT be acceptable? Should these be done in private or by public viewing? (Ahhh the days of the guillotine - HB will remember them well! !) ~ Grahame.

Would it help? When a thief is catched, doesn't the police punch and hit him while going to the police station before knowing that he knows somebody big? After paying or cleared he is back to the street and going back to stealing.

Your point is valid, but should be made into another thread.
Corporal punishment would be the issue here, and I see it as a necessary evil.
The pickpockets who work the streets, have little fear of the justice system that spits them back out the next day.
They might consider other careers, if they knew that they were going to be caned 20 times on the soles of their feet, and not be able to walk for a few days.
That's a real deterrent.

What about conning, deceiving others and stealing from people this way? Where it is not as clear cut as getting into somebody else’s pocket but still is a theft. Did they talk about it?

I am all for it, as corporal punishment might be the only language those low-life would understand.

Since they were discussing the introducing of caning as it is practised in "Malaysia", your question could likely be answered by doing a search on Google or some search engine to see the "who, what, when, why and how" of caning in Malaysia is performed. Obviously, these politicos had done that. I do know that it is a humiliating process (caned on the butt etc in public), turns "hard men" into cry babies, hurts like heck, AND deters crime.

The difference may be that the countries that use this type ofpunishment have it "down to a science" and it just probably could not be implemented here.

The rest of the world would call us savages and protest it's use.
They would apply political and financial pressure on us.

I don't think the DR would be able to get away with something like this although I believe the results might be helpful in dettering crime. For whatever reason the DR seems to get hammered about it's treatment of the Haitian popuation while in Malaysia they can do this and a whole lot more, such as forced religious conversions, put people to death for minor infractions safe have for terroristists organizations, etc, etc.

Can anybody say "politcally correct" press, please?
