Ironically I was just watching TV here in Mexico where I'm currently located and congress is currently discussing whether to legalize Marihuana. The law being discussed by congress would allow the possession of up to 30 grams, the shops to sell it would be regulated just like alcohol currently is - You'd need a license - cannot sell to minors and a shop cannot be within 10 meters of an educational facility...This last one I think is ridiculous (10 meters?)
Mido: I don't think you can compare tobacco, alcohol or anything else to hard drugs as none of these other substances normally don't make you steal, kill, etc to get your next fix...That to me is the deal breaker.

The reason why I compare illegal drugs with tobacco is since tobacco is perfectly easy available because it is legal, cheap, that is why people don't have to steal and kill.
The only reason why so called hard drug users have to steal and kill is because the drug is very expensive and not easy available. Why is it not available? Because it is illegal!
This was explained in many posts before here.

Sorry I don't agree with this. I think drugs could be very cheap and junkies would still steal and kill, because drugs completely consume a person's live to the point where that person does not work and can't think about anything else but the next high...Neither alcohol nor Tobacco does this to you. Again that to me is the difference.

Tobacco is EXTREMELY addictive. Imagine what would happen if it became illegal to grow, possess or smoke any form of tobacco. It would be yet another avenue for criminals to generate money and prices would drastically increase.

Show me one case of people addicted to Tobacco who have broken into someone's house to steal or sold their body or mugged someone to support their tobacco habit...
Don't you guys understand the difference I'm trying to point out? Yes...Tobacco, alcohol, etc can be addictive...but they normally don't get a hold of the user's mind to the point where all that person can think of...

Let's thread this back into the DR perspective.
I think we all know the US gov't spends quite a bit of $$ here helping to stem the trade of drugs. Should they? I mean, shouldn't they use that money elsewhere (like pay their global 'credit card' debt)? How much help does it really give to the Dominican people vs. how much it reduces drug imports into the US?
Obviously if there were no such things as illicit drugs this wouldn't be a question. But there are and they are likely to remain so for quite some time.
But how does this impact the DR?

I disagree that the situation would be worse despite what you are pointing out. Of course no solution will be perfect. Nobody wants their child addicted to any kind of drugs. Legalizing and regulating all currently illegal drugs will dramatically improve the situation, by taking the corruption and artificially high prices out of the equation.
It will be unfortunate that people will become addicted, but much less damage will be done to the rest of the population.
