What's up with the pictures of grown Dominicans wering bracers

Someone told me that they do it to show off how much money they've got since bracers are so expensive in DR.

So, is this sexy? is it tacky?

I vote for tacky.

What other things do you find tacky? or sexy for that matter.

Anyhow they are (or were) seen as cool, because they were expensive and if you were poor and your teeth happened to be crooked you were screwed. I'm sure this will pass overtime just like back in the days big gold chains and rings were considered cool.

My cousin just got braces, now he wont keep his flap shut. Flashing his pearly crooked yellows to everyone. Not sexy, not tacky, but does show a sign of wealth. It's a fad....like hammer pants and flat tops.....It's interesting what the high class elite chopos do in the name of "fashion."

By the way, real men wear suspenders.....

I don't think the braces are tacky in and of themselves. What is tacky is getting your mouth wired so you can show everyone how much money your mami and papi got. TACKY

Have you considered that they might actually need them?
Adults also need othordontics in certain cases.

Compared to the US and Europe, braces are very cheap here.
Someone at the office just saved around US$3000+ on getting
very modern ceramic braces fitted, plus the monthly follow up work etc.

It's not the fact of having braces but the fact that they don't care if people notice them. I wore those type of braces as a teenager and was a bit self-conscious because I got teased for being a metal mouth.
Here people are refreshingly uninhibited about them and pretty girls pose for their quinceañera photo baring their train track teeth, even models in ads - there is an element of status symbol combined with a lack of silly western hangups, IMO.
