Deceit, theft, lies and lack of education are normal here. The whole country is used to free money.
Why do so many assume that the only expats here in this country are chasing skirts, etc? Many of us are married and have children and are leading normal lives. The DR consists of more than Sosua or Boca Chica. Edúcate ya.

As far as "dreams" go, some places in the DR would still qualify as people and the weather are nice and still relatively safe. Sure, corruption is an issue but if you don't let it bother you it has minimal effect.
Exactly- Corruption is everywhere, same for the oldest and second oldest professions. My rule is to trust nobody completely, be friendly or at least polite, treat people with respect regardless of their background. I've learned from my wife and mother-in-law how to deal with Dominicans. I fully trust my mother-in-laws judgement of people; she has only a grade six education but she has the best bullsh-t detector I've every seen and her honesty and discretion are legendary. Back to the subject, Steroid use is widespread in the DR, not with just ball players but with numerous guys trying to look good for the girls. I've been introduced to a number of shady people, both Dominican and non-Dominican. I choose who I associated with, as we all do.

I don't know why you quoted my post. It was not a fairy tale in itself but told about a situation where a person was being told fairy tales - the former baseball hopeful and his family. Don't you think it endorses your initial point about deceipt and corruption being rampant in the DR?

Chiri - not that naive and just powerful enough to know who's sock you are.

There is a big hullabalu in the States with Mark Cuban the owner of that basketball team that keeps getting fined. Cuban recently wanted the NBA to legalize "administered and supervised" use of steroids....can you imagine "roid rage" among guys 6'9" ???? What mayhem!!

Ignorance and greed...major setbacks for these kids.. their ignorance and the greed of the "buscones" ...

Cuban may be excentric, but he is right, if administered by a doctor, steroids will make the sports better. Haven't heard nobody dying because of it, hell look at Arod, you cannot pitch to the guy these days.

Yeah, I saw that ABC After School Special too. I still don't think that there has been any conclusive proof that anabolic steroids cause depression or suicide.

I've worked out with guys using that stuff, they tend to be more aggressive. Maybe it's because it shrinks their willy!!!

Default steroids are harmless??? and I thought I heard all BS

Not long ago I saw a very painfull documentary about 2 former WC-athletes from Eastern-Germany who were administered steroids under "carefull" supervision of doctors...

One of the 2 women had herself transformed to a man, not because she wanted to but it alleviated some of the pain she had. Both were now in their 40's and could hardly walk anymore, could not sleep because of the constant pain, etc... Actually, the doc was 2 years old, and one of them has committed suicide since...

And look at your own Sylvester Stallone, with multiple healthproblems because of steroids...

Aside from that BS-tale of steroids being harmless, what about the value of achievements in sports, if they are influenced by the use of drugs or hormones. Top Athletes should be an example for the youth, and therefore be absolutely clean (I know that is a dream, and will never happen)... A young kid should be able to dream about him equalling or surpassing his sportshero some day, and not think about shooting up some drugs...

Just a thought... maybe we should increase the wages those athletes are paid, some more, so we increase the pressure to perform on those guys even more.
