Default Massive condemnation of DR beisbol and authorities

Today's New York Times has a tremendous article on what goes on in Dominican baseball: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/25/sp...ed=2&th&emc=th

It is a mind-boggling read of greed, corruption, and stupidity....Or "How to kill the goose that laid the Golden Egg"

Everything Dominican is now a tale of greed, corruption and stupidity. I love the way DR1 tries to keep expat dreams alive: there are no whores or sankies; no pyramid schemes; there are honest lawyers....etc.

I think it much fairer to say that some posters are more optimistic about the DR than others might be. However, there's a pretty decent cross section of opinions expressed here overall.

The thing about the article is that it is as much a condemnation of Major League Baseball as it is about the Dominican role in the cover-up of steroid use.

Both entities should take a good hard look at themselves before being so quick to judge others. The same would go for some posters who are equally eager to pass judgement.

Are you kidding me? We are some of the first to denounce sankies/sankietts, corruption and other issues...come on, be fair...

"Honest lawyer"= oxymoron...like giant shrimp, or army intelligence, or, dare I say "different Dominican"?

I guess where you live there are no prostitutes, no ponzi schemes and no politicians are on the take and all lawyers are legitimate?

As far as "dreams" go, some places in the DR would still qualify as people and the weather are nice and still relatively safe. Sure, corruption is an issue but if you don't let it bother you it has minimal effect.

BTW, nice article.

The threat of closing down the training camps as a solution to the drug abiuse and falsification of documents issue will certainly help, but more than one will need to closed so that the buscone feels the "pinch" on his demand.

When we lived in SD our cleaning lady's teenage son was one of tens of thousands of hopefuls who were led to believe they had potential. She told us he had to pay his trainer RD$3000 per month for "vitamin injections" which at the time was about a third of the family income.

There are many truly amazing people on these forums (myself included). But I am a born Dominican who is concerned that gringos continue to flock to the island, the North Coast in particular, based on fairy tales posted here by the more naive, or powerful DR1 moderators. There is information and there is flackery. These boards have too many hacks and flacks. I doubt there is an English publication in the Dominican Republic with any journalistic value or integrity. There are just too many untold stories; too many murders; too much paid journalism.

Apparently, it sounds like you are really concerned for us "gringos". Don't worry junior, we can take care of ourselves.

This gringo had a wonderful day yesterday and last night. Having another today actually, here on the North Coast. Love my weekends. That's my fairy tale and I'm sticking to it.
