Default Barcelo Bavaro Beach hotel.

Hello dear friends!

I'm a newcomer at this forum. First of all sorry for my English
My name is Anton. I'm from Russia, Siberia, Novosibirsk city - the capital of Siberia

I have ordered the room at Barceló Bávaro Beach hotel with my tour
operator from 06/09/2007 to 17/09/2007 (at tour operator list order the
name of hotel is "Barcelo Bavaro Beach & Carib, is it right?)
So i would to ask you about some info for this hotel. Maybe someshting interesting. counseles? What pavilion is better for living (in tour operator list order there are no specific pavilion&room) and so on.

I hope that it was heart-warming co-operation between us in this forum and cordial reception in september.

Also I want to ask, can I get the card of Dominican mobile operator for the telefhone calls? Cause our russians operators are veru expensive in DR.

Barcelo Bavaro Beach and Barcelo Bavaro Caribe are two separate hotels within the same Barcelo Bavaro complex. What your touroperator's listing may indicate as that you can be put up in either of the two hotels. They are of the same category and offer the same srevices, actually, they are next to each other. Personally, ask for Beach, it is more central than Caribe.

The hotels are 4* hotels, each room has TV, AC, minibar. Don't expect Ritz but it won't be Sleep Inn either. You will have access to other hotels' services within the complex (Casino, Caribe, Beach, Golf), with the expection of Palace services.

If I am not mistaken, Beach has various buildings, while Caribe has one large single building. There is no difference if you are on the first or third floor, the only dofference may be the view, and all rooms are the same. I think all buildings are 3-stories high.

You can activate Orange GSM card, but to do that you will need to go outside of hotel. The closest city is Veron, which has Orange dealers. You will need passport to activate the card, the cost is RD$ 350. About 11 USD.
You will get RD$ 100 call credit, you can recharge by purchasing rechargable cards at most colmados, and also most probably also within the resort. Credit card recharge is not available.

Your phone must be able to support 1900 MHz (it must be a triband or quadband phone).

There is also Codetel/Claro GSM, but right now foreigners with passports cannot activate prepaid GSM account. Moreover, Claro's rates are higher than Orange's.

Here is the link to Orange (in Spanish)
Orange Dominicana

The calling rate to Russia is approximately US$0.40 per minute with all taxes.
A RD$100 card (US$3) will give you about 7.5 minutes of calltime to Russia.
You will be billed at 1 second increments after the first full minute (for international calls) and 1 second increments from start for national calls. You do not pay for incoming calls.

Thank you very much for your answer! It's very kind.

I have SonyEricsson w810 so i think i'll not have the problem with 1900 mhz.

I see that my foreigner passport will be good to activate Orange card with Orange dealers, isn't it? May i show them the copy of the passport or i need original one only? Is it safe to go to Verona single by taxi? What the cost?

One more question. Is it safe to buy trip tour (ex. isl.Saona) from agencies outside of hotel? I've heard that it more cheaper than at the hotel.

You should be fine with that.

You need the Original. Copy will NOT be accepted.

It's Veron. Yes you can go single by Taxi. The hotel bellboy will call the taxi for you (SIUTRATURAL). The rate would be about 10 dollars each way. If you get your own transportation (e.g. taxi) form the airport, it's better to stop to activate your card on your way to hotel.

One more option you have, you can take the bus that goes to Veron, boarding it at the employee's entrance. The cost is about US$1. They will leave you at Plaza Vimenca in Veron, where the Orange dealership is located. Same thing, board the bus for the way back. But if you don't speak any Spanish, I suggest you the taxi, as getting on/off these local buses may be troublesome (you have to shout to drop you off where you need them to let you drop you off... so you need to know when to shout)

I have never done that but I assume it's safe. otherwise, the agencies would not be operating any more... IMHO.

I don't think so. There is an Internet Cafe in the hotel, but the options what you can do with the computer are pretty much limited to browsing.

In general, I don't think it will be easy for you to do while in Bavaro. I don't know anyone who can do that or any store that does it. Most Internet cafes don't allow using computer for much things besides browsing.

Costwise, timewise, and stress-wise, your best option is to bring a spare memory card for your camera and do the transfers when you return back home.

In Higuey (40 kms away) in Supermercado Higueyano there is a machine that can print your photos from various memory sticks, but it does not burn to DVD.

I suggest getting one of those really small "thumb drives" that hold perhaps 8gb. The resort computers usually have USB...

Bavaro is a neat place, but I doubt you will use much more than that. I shoot in RAW format, and typically do not go beyond 4GB.
