Dominican Republic builds fast link to Punta Cana

Associated Press
2009-10-11 11:58 PM

The Dominican Republic is building a highway to shorten the drive from Santo Domingo to the popular resort town of Punta Cana.
President Leonel Fernandez says construction of the 45-mile (70-kilometer) highway will cost $279 million. It would together three airports.

Construction of El Coral highway began Friday and is expected to take three years. The four-lane highway will have three bridges and two toll booths. It is 50 kilometers (30 miles) shorter than the existing highway.

The Brazilian company Odebrecht is overseeing the project.

Fernandez says he also released $10 million to restart work on the Punta Cana boulevard that would link all hotels in the eastern coastal region

Yes, Leo was in town a couple of weeks ago "inaugurating" the road construction. Platoons of trucks and road-building equipment and dozens of jeepetas and minibuses swamped the area - all festooned with PLD posters, and of course we hosted the gentlemen of the press.

Not sure when the actual work is supposed to start. The next day they were all gone without trace (unless you count a few hundred plastic bottles and styrofoam containers they left by the roadside) and there's no sign of any of the trucks and equipment whose drivers dutifully pitched up and were given RD$500 for their efforts, or whatever the going rate is these days.

The highway is a continuation of the Autopista del Este which ends in La Romana. Chances are good that the construction of the Autopista Coral will start near La Romana and end in the Punta Cana area.

The company that is overseeing the construction just opened their offices in La Romana so I see that as a hopeful sign! The bypass around La Romana has had a lot of work already done-5-6 years ago-I think there's hope we will see it done in our lifetime-but it depends on how young you are!!
