Job, Internship, etc
I am an American who has been living and teaching in the DR for the past year. I am tutoring a recent HS graduate in English ...she is near fluent, has basic computer skills, very athletic, has worked with kids, has some experience teaching basic English, lots of experience working with Americans, and is an overall fast learner. She has no family and therefore not many "connections" to get a decent job using her English skills ...and I know how connections are everything when finding work here.
I would like to find something equivelent to an internship for her for the Spring 2008. An unpaid intership would be fine ...anything to get her job experience, possibly something that could lead to a paid position. Santiago or the North coast areas would be ideal. She could be a great potential employee for a business or company in the tourism sector, and setting up an internship could be a way to get a free "trial period" for a future employee?
Anyone know of anything? Any advice?

If she would like to come down to Santo Domingo, send me her resume and I will see what I can do in the Call Center industy here. Right now, our agents are making 20,000 - 30,000 per month for native-like, or close to native-like speakers.

Call center and Internship, do they go together?
Sorry, but it sounds more like a way of tapping cheap labor, than offering a "real" internship. An internship should be about offering a quality experience, with training, supervision and a "real career" opportunity, not about making RD$20-30k monthly.
Do me a favor, send me her resume and info to my email address and let's see what we can do. I know of a few companies that offer excellent internship programs with a very good track record. Plus it's something DR1 well may develop in the future in cooperation with a few people that have years of experience in developing excellent internship programs in the USA and Europe.

Mr Robert I was not looking to tap into any cheap labor force. I just know that some of the big call centers in Santiago might be interested in interns. I cant speak for others in the industry but is not all about agents in this business.
One of the few friend that i have in this industry had 3 interns from PUCMM last semester (programmers)......... I am sorry if me trying to help was mis understood.
Wil lbe more carefull next time.

My post was not directed at you, so don't take it personally.
I'm sure some of the larger more established call centers can offer "real" internships, but they are few and far between.
You have to remember, some business have no idea what an internship is really about, yet they still take on interns.

I have heard a little about the call centers ...might be an option, but I'm not sure it would be ideal. Robert- I appreciate the offer to check into some intern opportunities-- we will get you a resume and contact you via email soon ...thanks for the advice/info from all.

I also am in the same boat with you chola. I work and at, and have contact with some of the largest and most respected call centers in the world. There are often many opportunities for intern work in areas such as project development, curriculum development, IT, human resources, recruiting, training, management, etc. It is true that the majority of the people we hire are for entry-level positions, but this certainly wouldn't be the case for an intern.
Although drmc is not interested in placing his young friend in this industry, it is an opportunity for future people who may be interested. I also would be interested in working with you (Robert) on this endeavor.
