Welcome!! Oh boy was I excited to see your post. Could we ever use a REAL nurse at the NPH orphanage (it's in San Pedro de Macoris though.) Whenever we have nurses visiting from elsewhere, I try to have them teach some skills to the DR nurses...basic training is just lacking in so many areas from things like handwashing and having charts ready to how to measure medication.
The only problem here is that nurses are not viewed nearly in the same light as they are in N. America and Europe. I've given talks to private collegio schools where I describe the demand for well-trained nurses and allied hcps (in the US, being an RN pretty much guarantees you a job ANYWHERE) and the teachers have told me that they steer their students completely away from nursing because "in the DR they consider nurses glorified housekeepers" (sorry but that is the direct quote.) One issue here is that immediately following 12th grade students may enter directly into medical school here. In the US there is a 4-5 yr BS/BA degree required before entering medical school.
I'm with Reese on the find yourself a foreign family that needs a professionally trained private duty nurse. There must be some families with higher need children. Or if money is not an issue, you could find an orphanage up there that desperately needs your training (or come down to the South side to NPH!!!)
