Jo Jo
I am a woman in my 30's living and working in the DR. I was lucky (?) to be offered a role here with a company I worked for in Australia.
I read that you are wanting to get your residency for a year - well it will take you the best part of year to get that! Nothing happens in a hurry in this country. I have been here for 11 months and still don't have my visa.
Employment prospects are pretty bleak here at the moment. Business' are closing down every day and foreign investors are pulling out of the country. Unless you can secure a role before coming here, I would think twice. I am leaving the country next month as the project I have been working on has been put on hold.
I have a friend who has recently left after 18 months of living here because they were unable to secure employment...
You need to be aware that the average Dominican earns around RD$7,000 per month (approx US$200 per month). Wages do vary, but even qualified professional such as Accountants will only earn US$12K per annum.
The cost of living in the Capital is horrendious. Prices are rising daily. Just to give you an idea, the Cost of Living Index issued by the Central Bank in December 2008 was over 10%.
If you do plan to come here for a year, particulary if you want to live in the capital, I would suggest that you have a budget of a minimum of US$2K per month. Even if you secure employment, you will probably find that you will need to 'top up' your salary. There are many people who live on less than this, but this is what I spend (and I have subsidised accommodation and company vehicle).
I wish you all the best.
