Garbage in Samana
Over the years, Samana has had lots of problems with garbage disposal, no matter what system they tried.
But the problem was solved when they obtained about 30 huge garbage bins and an enormous truck capable of picking them up and dumping their load in the back of the truck. These bins are like the biggest you see behind shopping malls in the US. Much bigger than a car, for example. These bins were located in various areas and people would carry their garbage to them. Took about 3 days to fill, and as long as the truck made its scheduled rounds, there was no odor.
People in Samana were estatic.
There is presently an Italian film crew at Los Haitises, the national park across the Bay of Samana from Samana, filming the Italian version of Survivor. They obtained two large generators, but had no way to get them to Los Haitises.
Arrangements were made with the Navy to transport the generators across the bay to Los Haitises, and with town officials to use the truck to load and unload the generators.
Yesterday, in the midst of the tropical storm watch, the landing craft sets sail for Los Haitises loaded with two generators and Samana's only garbage truck.
Yes, folks, before it could be unloaded, the barge capsized.
Samana now has 30 huge containers filling with garbage and a huge garbage truck upside down in front of a cave in the Bay of Samana with only its wheels visible.
It will be interesting to see how this story ends. Will Dominican ingenuity carry the day, finding a way to pick that truck up out of the water and carry it back to Samana or will Samana Bay have a new hazard to navigation?
