Default re: Exxon in U.S, but Esso in the D.R.

Dear Moderator,

Is there a reason for the anomaly that 30 years ago in our country, Esso changed it's name to Exxon ( now Exxon Mobil), but is still known as Esso in the Dominican Republic?

Was this a strategy on the part of Exxon, to remain Exxon in the U.S., but operate as Esso in other countries, in hopes of limiting liability in the event of another mammoth Exxon Valdez type disaster?

Just curious...

"Exxon Mobil Corporation is the parent of Esso, Mobil and ExxonMobil companies around the world that sell fuels and lubricants under the Esso brand name."
