I once literaly drew up a somewhat similar system on a napkin for a guy I met in a bar. He claimed to have some property in Costa Rica with a hill and a stream but no power nearby. The setup I came up with was for a smaller system, but used a centrifugal pump for a turbine and a truck alternator for a generator to keep a battery bank charged.

It is quit simple. Even if you haven't got an alternator a simple electric motor works also. Approcimatly 500 wat for every Horsepower
