Thumbs up

Congratulations to all of you! It is simply amazing what may be accomplished by a single idea.

As a former director of a non-profit society in Canada I know there are many hoops to be jumped and stumbles along the way. I am only a poor "tourista' but I try to do something to help others on my travels. For the DR this has meant Sousa Kids and Mustard Seed House. I will definitely be a supporter for this cause (whatever the name). Would be great if the t-shirts were available and for sale at places like Checkpoint and Rockys,-I'll take a Tank top in Medium please!

Speaking of Rockys, hope to stop in there this trip. Again, congratulations to all of you. "one small step....."

Default Alright!

Cat' perhaps you can clue us in on the finer points of running a non-profit.
Happy to see that more folks like you with the capability to make useful/constructive contributions are there & willing to help out.
Hopefully, many more of us can join in and participate to clean our country or, at least, neaten the north.

Where's my t-shirt?

Default Slow going..... Update

O.K. - It's not going as fast as I wanted.

Here's the update;

It's going slow, I keep telling myself that this is the DR and even if I was in the U.S. this kind of project would take even longer.

I've met with several government officials to get their conditional approval for what we want to do and they have all been very receptive and helpful.

At times I think that there's some little Dominican gremlin playing havoc with my making progress. The last meeting I had was with a general from the Capital. The 'general' spoke no English and I arranged to have a translator come and meet me for lunch. Unfortunately the translator had a heart attach and died on the way to the meeting. I feel horrible and my heart goes out to his family.

I meet with the general and sold our program in my mutilated Spanish. He was very kind and seemed to be genuinely excited to help in anyway he can.

After that one of you out there gave me the flu.

So, after all of that I'm back in the game and will update as soon as I have more information.

Good wishes to all and please hang in there.

Jack

Lee/Jack (whoever you are ),

Thanks for keeping the updates coming and sorry to hear of the death of your translator.

As for business operational delays in DR... been there, done that, doing it now, and still waiting (and waiting) for the t-shirt to be delivered.

No amount of daily pre-planning and/or follow up is too much. Even with that, you honestly can't avoid some of the things that crop up. On the plus side, it's extremely educational and you just have to incorporate what you learn into your next project.

You're making quite a jump into Dominican society. Much more than many expats manage to do. My hat's off to you.

Default Just a thought.

Jack, has the escrow account with the bank been set up yet? Methinks this should be prioritized so that folks like me can begin to contribute. The sooner it's done, the more moolah it will accumulate. Sorry about your translator and get well soon so that we can get rolling again.

A million thanks amigo!

Don:

I appriciate your suggestion however we are not at the stage to start collecting money. We have a couple more steps and then you can count your Pesos I'll be after all of you to donate to the escrow account.

Jack/Lee - or whatever

Setting up the escrow account is done when you set up the non profit here. Hopefully it won't proceed quite so slowly but some things are beyond anyones control....

Really? So, is that, by Dominican standards, difficult/time consuming? Don't you need to hire a lawyer? or bribe someone? doesn't this process require pesos to get it done? Who's gonna pay for the set-up? Is anyone assisting
Jack/Lee-or whatever? Hmmmm..... Let's get going everyone!

Wouldn't it be one heck of a lot easier, safer and smart, to not collect any monies until the whole thing is legitimized?
There's no reason one couldn't take pledges, in the meantime.
