Sounds like a lot of procedure and bureaucracy, and not a lot of action. Whenever you go collect $$$ remember this: generally speaking, there is an inverse correlation to the depth of a persons pockets and the length of their arms. Everyone's mouth says "yes"; trying to get them to pony up is when they go AWOL.
Just go pick up the trash. Recruit some True Believers to help. Charter those who actually GAS* to bring a friend next time. And charter THOSE to bring a friend next time. Make it an action Grass Roots movement, not another rich liberal Feel-Good NGO where nothing gets done beyond lip flapping, and mutual back-slapping admiration for ~feeling~ soooo ~concerned~. Have a bias toward action, not talk, organizational meetings, money and bureaucracy.
I still like my Trash Gestapo concept...
CB's Law of Rhetorical Economics: "The reason talk is cheap is because the Supply exceeds the demand."

Been saying that from the get-go, but it's Jackieboo's operation, and he wants to do it his way.
If you take all the time and energy devoted to making it a formal organization, and devote it to the cause, ten times as much will get done, 5 times faster.

Being a board member that enjoys it when I see something that benefits the Dominicans I subscribed to this thread a while ago to watch the progress of this country getting rid of unhealthy and unsightly trash.
This thread was started on 4 December and now it's 53 days later. I think I'm in the same mindset of Cobraboy now and would say at this point "Where's the beef".
It would just seem that there should have been a report of at least 3 or 4 bags of trash having been collected and disposed of within those 53 days.
Excuse me for meddling in that which is 7 hours travel distance from where I live but I thought I would convey how some may interpret the actions to date.

It's good that he does. He is going to learn masses from the actual doing and I'm all in favour of people learning. They have to do it for themselves. All the accumulated wisdom of the oldies is a slow method of learning. Learning by doing (the good & the bad) is a lot faster. And in two years time he could be advising the newer folk to start small............
So I wish him all the best and would suggest that he thoroughly documents the project so he can write it up afterwards as a learning tool for the folks who arrive in 2009. Who knows? His way may turn out to be the best.

Based on the experience and problems of past groups - when dealing with money of any kind you better make sure you have your legal ducks in a row! Otherwise later there can be questions, accusations and who need that grief.
Just my opinion.....

Rick:
I agree with you, if I were on the outside of this project looking in I'd have the exact same attitude.
After many conversations and a ton of research I reached a conclusion of where I want the project to go and what I want the project to be.
Thank you Planner for the note on the money. In NO way do I want to collect money and not have a proper legal method of reconciling those donations. After seeing and reading all of the rumours and acusations on this board concerning non-profits I have decided that our organization will go legal, all the way.
Secondly the 'action' part of the project. There have been too many one time clean up campaigns in this country. Good hearted people organize, get a few donations (money and materials) and clean an area, however there is no follow up, no 'meat' in the potatoes.
I want this project to be a lasting event, I want it morph in to the fabric of the Dominican life and I want the next generation of Dominicans to understand that the enviroment IS important.
Because I chose to go the long run it's taking more time than I originally expected.
If any of you would like to organize a clean up in the mean time I'm right there with you and will lend support whereever I can.
In the mean time be patient and hopefully you'll start to see action shortly.
Regards,
lee a.k.a jack

No offense intended, but "one time" projects are better than "no time" projects.
Is there something happening behind the scenes that is preventing you and your fine group from collecting trash-to show steely resolve to the doubters and bureaucrats-while the organizational/bureaucratic wheels slowly turn?
Why are donations necessary to clean up trash? All that is needed are dedicated people, a bunch of inexpensive trash bags, and folks agreeing to drop the bags by the dump.
Am I missing something?
In fact, I'll drop several boxes of big trash bags by Rocky's next month, so $$$ for bags won't be an issue. Will that kick-start the actual trash pick up?

Seems to me this project is Jackieboo's initiative and he's free to do it his way - succeed or fail.
As the originator of the concept, if he wants/needs to work a few months up front in an attempt to establish some sort of ongoing project:
It's his decision, no?
Nothing wrong with his ultimate goal, right?
Pre-planning makes sense, no?
One recent memorable attempt at starting a charity fund has been the well-deserved recipient of shyte on this board for their lack of setting things up first.
For those so keen on getting some trash picked up in the next week or month, maybe you should organize a group of your own? I'm surprised you didn't years ago since it's so important to you. I doubt Jackieboo would object & has already said he'd participate in such an effort.
To have an open dialogue with him expressing your disagreement with his approach is one thing. To ridicule his actions to date before giving him time to succeed is just sad.
From his very first post, he talked about setting up something that would be long term. He started this thread only 6 weeks ago. I say, give him a chance.
