I too have seen several US $1000.s leaving me, much of it, sorry to say, by ex-pats.
I didn't mean to put the burden of proof on you, nor does Gary have to justify himself to anyone, even less to me.
I'm just looking for ideas on how we can make everyone comfortable with him and his project, so that they can support him.

Sounds like a great resilient guy

It may have to wait, if I'm the one who has to get the ball rolling.
I'm just barely getting over a bad bout of deathly fever and it may be a month or more before I start to be energized.

Quite rightly so, and I do hope that both you and Gary know that my intentions are good and I'm just trying to assist as well as I can in my bumbling way.
I'm truly not up to speed right now, as mentioned above, so pardon me if my choice of words is not as diplomatic as should be.

No problem and no offense taken Rocky. I lost some (most) of my diplomatic skills after a few years here. Sorry if I come accross a little short. I do believe that you are a leader, though not always correct (hahaha), you know how to get things done or know others that can.

I hope that you feel better soon and give him a call. Or others with honerable intentions also.

Regards, Ringo

As we all do.

Nay nay.
You did not come off sounding short.
I think you were spot on and very informative.
It is I who am not up to par.
I already unwittingly insulted a poster yesterday, by bad choice of words.
In short, my brain is not what it should be, which at the best of times, is still not all that great.

Thanks for those kind words, but I am hoping someone else will lead up the charge.
I am weakened by my bout with fever, and it was a wake up call to me, that I need to devote more time caring for myself, and a bit less involved in so many other things.

If nobody else steps up, I will, but I am really hoping someone else can take charge.

PS: What about you, Ringo?
You know Gary.
Would you be available to rally up the DR1ers to help his program?

He can use help. Garry is worth supporting.
Excellent! I'm so glad I found the news item and that we've had it verified by Ringo. Garry sounds like someone who knows how to go about these sort of projects, using his many years experience here, his contacts & his several languages. He also sounds like someone who approaches the task with the requisite level of humility & understanding. There are many unsung expat 'heroes' in the DR, quietly working away at a worthwhile project & never blowing their own trumpets - looks like we've found another one! Maybe all those who earlier in this thread were enthused to assist in this project would like to contact Garry? I see Rocky has posted contact info if the Sosua News thread becomes unworkable. I would urge DR1ers to offer assistance here. At the very least we're getting the word out........

As anyone that has followed this post knows I originally wanted expats to come together and donate monies on a monthly basis that could be used to help clean areas and educate people.

That idea didn’t work on many levels.

However I didn’t give up and my partner and I are now running a mildly successful environmental company that donates all of the profits to the education of or clean up of litter here on the north coast.

We have met with Gary Kooy and the man has an amazing amount of energy and vision for the future of this island. Gary is a prime example of someone that is ‘doing’ what they believe is correct.

Garry has worked hard for many years as Lambada says, "unsung hero.. quietly working away..."

Offering help is great and needed. However, many of us have seen good intentions and worthwhile projects go bad with some very hard feelings left in the wake. My support of Garry is to let HIM lead and direct. This has been his project for years. Some good people are needed for getting the word out and raising money. Again, I will not speak for Garry, but thier is enough projects that I'm sure just about anyone can find a part. Teach in the schools, work with the local business's, clear land and plant trees and gardens... Marine classes... a little fishing? ... just a few. It is not just about picking up garbage.

Those that are already working on similar programs, maybe join ranks some, learn, teach and gain some political and social influance.

Garry Kooy just appointed as Enviornmental Director (?) for Sosua.

Just talked to Garry is AM. The Mayor, after much discussion with Garry, has appointed Garry and grants him the authority and power to handle enviornmental issues is Sosua.

At last. Maybe progress.

Congratulations Garry... and all of us.

Regards Ringo

FANTASTIC ...... You don't get THAT sort of recognition overnight in the DR unless you are a multi-millionaire or really know your way around!!

ALL kudos to Gary for sticking it out & taking all the frustrations/setbacks over the years! Many of us know the upstream fight necessary to get a job started - to be APPOINTED to a position of responsibility is beyond the wildest expectations (but not desires) for most of us!! ~ Grahame
