You bet we can.
I might have come off sounding like I was saying no more posts were needed, when in fact, what I was trying to say, is that I'm satisfied and have nothing more to say, except, have yourself a good day.

Default recently returned from Cabarete

Saw the forum and wanted to post. I recently returned from Cabarete.
I walked the beach as much as I could while there for a week and was in the habit of picking up trash that I felt could cause injury. My suggestion if not already posted, is to have receptacles every 50 yards or so with signs suggesting we all do our part. Maybe have kids paid to help pick up and hand in garbage bags by weight to a deposal center conveniently located. Why stop at the beach, same for the streets. A few pesos go a long way to help with education never mind way of life in DR.

Default At Ringo's invitation

I just came back from a meeting, where the above mentioned Garry Kooy and associates are meeting with government officials, to get funding for the following environmental project.
Good news surprises.

My husband and I just bought a house in the DR and I must admit that I find it very urgent to find a solution to the trash problem - La Romana is covered with trash of every kind and when I see kids playing baseball in a field completely clogged with plastic bottles and bags, and probably also covered with broken glass, I want to cry !
In Brazil they started trash recycling cooperatives which work very well and I don't see why it wouldn't work here. The people in the trash-covered areas are so poor that there has to be an economic incentive for them to start caring about trash - why pick up trash when you are worried about feeding your kids that day ? But if there's a financial incentive, all of a sudden it becomes a priority to clean up !
We won't be spending a lot of time in the DR since our house is just for vacations and for rentals, but I'd be very happy to join a recycling cooperative in La Romana if someone local set it up.

Default Trash collection

If the government were to calculate the monitary cost of the damage to the enviroment, the loss of tourist revenue and the adverse effect on business...not to mention the damage to the reputation of the Dr in the world. then take half that amount and plough it into a proper waste collection system privately run that would give those out of work a decent wage for keeping the enviroment clean. maybe then you would see young kids running and racing each other the pick up the plastic bag to claim his reward.

You dont have to be rich, educated or Einstien to think of the benefits this would bring. Poverty does not have to mean lack of cleanliness or give anyone the right to pollute as they please. Here near me the river was completely blocked with trash so much so they had to use a mechanical digger to clear it. When you looked for the source of the problem it was easy to find. 15 colmados all backed onto the river and a trail of trash leading from each to the bank.

I expect they all got a telling off and they will be at it as soon as the truck pulls out of the street.....yuk how can people live like that. As you drive around you can see raw sewerage running down the hillside into the roads but nothing is done and noone cares really.
