Sorry Manzana but you're way behind on the information curve. The Dominican government has and is still presently doing that.

Very interesting read on the problem and possible solution to the electricity issue.

I don't know about you, but after getting past all the technical gobbledygook, I was left with, guess what?...

I just loved the following, among others:

"The country can be available to IEA DSM DRR project participants by developing stable and self-consistent market rules, under an orientation that differentiates customer service reliability levels to give wholesale and retail customers' affordable choices"

"DRR could eventually reduce theft in the Dominican system. By requiring demand-responsiveness capability as a condition of service, free riding and theft risks could be properly mitigated"

No Kidding.
I got a headache, just thinking about attempting to understand it, without feeling like I was getting fleeced, or more specifically, buried under a pile of BS.

Default President submits hydroelectric project loan

QUOTE dominicantoday

Santo Domingo.- President Leonel Fernández has submitted a loan contract worth US$81.3 million to Congress, via the Senate, for the Palomino hydroelectric project, which will have an installed capacity of 99MW. The hydroelectric dam will be located between the southwestern cities of Azua and San Juan de la Maguana. Work was started on the project last June.

The loan was negotiated with Brazil’s National Economic and Social Development Bank and the commercial contract by the Dominican Corporation of State-Owned Electricity Companies (CDEEE) and the Brazilian Norberto Odebrecht S.A. construction company.

The total cost of the project is over US$225 million, of which US$15 million will be spent on geological environmental engineering studies.

The rest of the contract loans needed to cover the total cost exceeds US$130 million, which will be sent to Congress in advance, according to the President’s letter.

“As the power problem is one of this government’s highest priorities, and in pursuit of the benefit of the Dominican people, we are promoting the construction of this kind of project, which increases the availability of electrical energy, without having to spend large amounts of resources on the purchase of fuel for the country”, says the letter.

Senators are due to discuss the contract on Tuesday, and it will also be examined by the Senate finance commission.

I like how work has already commenced on the project before the geological environmental engineering studies have been paid for.

They're going to build a Metro in Azua????

I'm sorry, I mis-read the post, all I saw was about a failure to first do some necessary studies and something about construction starting without same and I automatically thought 'metro'.

Sorry board members I was momentarily worried there. Carry on.

Default Damn! Another Dam!

Damn! Another Dam!
How long has the Monción project been completed -- damn wise that is, the electric generation and irrigation of La Línea are still awating completion, right?
A dozen years anyway?
And someone earlier on in this thread said "...and don't give me any more BS about political corruption ...". Oh. In that case, there's no discussion at all.

Default Jarabacoa - Electricity 24/7

Just got back from a visit to Jarabacoa. We had heard last month that the neighborhoods that pay for electricity there will receive it 24/7. Of course, I didn't believe it, but it does seem to be true. We were there for 4 days and the power never went off from the power company. One of life's minor miracles.
