I saw a report in the Dominican Today that the 2006 Environmental Performance Index has been released. According to Dominican Today, the Dominican Republic has a dismal rank at 119 in a group of 149 countries. http://www.dominicantoday.com/app/article.aspx?id=22076

Here is the Index. I've not had time to read any part of it. Environmental Performance Index

Uh, Chris, guess this is the peril of relying on Dominican Today for environmental news. They are mixing two different things.

FESS never elaborated the ESI -- that was done by Yale and Colombia University, and the last one to be publicly released was the one we covered in the Green Team blog back in January 2006 at the following link: http://www.dr1.com/blogs/entry.php?u...ment&e_id=1439

They also have the numbers wrong: the DR scored 54 out of 133 countries ranked.

The Foundation for Environmental Sustainability and Security (FESS) which Dominican Today mentions did a report for USAID on DR "environmental security" back in 2005. That report can be downloaded at this link: http://www.fess-global.org/files/dr_...ull_report.pdf

Here's one hot off the press (actually, just heard it on the radio). Tenerías Bermúdez (leather tanning factory in Santiago) has been closed and the manager arrested, for contaminating the Yaque del Norte river.
