CC & MAR, if you two want to continue trading personal barbs, go right ahead -- but via PMs or emails, not here.

I think that the broader points about Dominicans complaining, not taking responsibility etc. have been made.

Now, what to do about about tackling the Haina contaminate site, how to tackle the lead-acid battery artesanal mining (don't dignify it by calling it "recycling"!) problem in the DR, and how to keep the DR from ever landing on such a list again?

Allow me to throw a suggestion into the ring.
It seems to me that LF is constantly on the move trying to be like "the big boys"I think it is in the blood of all pols, whether they are corrupt, clean or in-between to want to leave a legacy of an achievment in their administration.Maybe, this is just the cause that would put him over the top in the eyes of his people and other country and city leaders.
The very fact that he went ahead with the Metro and made references to the train system in NYC are evidence that he would like to be "vision" in the eyes of (you fill in the blanks)_________________.

So, what I am suggesting is a lobbying effort, an international appeal, a public outcry, a system of heavy duty fines to the industries that are culpable, or any and all political action that will make LF look not like a "minor league player "in world politics but a man of vision. How to do this I DONT"T know but I do know that a concerted effort of pro-active steps can be very effective and perhaps tickle his ego.

Since I do not live in the DR ("what do you know your don't live here")nor do I have any voice in the political system ("you know shtye about politics in the DR) I offer this suggestion only as on observation from a person living in a major city that these tactics have worked in before.

A clean-up operation is planned, according to reports I read several weeks ago - by the DR environment and health ministries in conjunction with UASD and the Blacksmith Institute:

Does anyone know if this plant (that has since moved) was subjected to fines? How did they change their operation so as to be in compliance?

It looks like the company, Metaloxa, was just closed down for not complying with environmental guidelines, and no further action was taken - but I hope this is not the case.

Interesting information Chirimoya.

Of course, this leaves the following info up in smoke, no?

BTW, CC has some very good ideas! Washington should consult with him prior to "attacking others", because "if you won't recognize the problem, you can never fix it!"

What country do many Dominicans look up to? Hm, interesting.

Thumbs down The Goverment does not know how to work!

Try driving in Santiago, the sewers that are on many roads fill up and boil out unto the street. The underpass get so flooded that if you drive a small car you will flood your engine. Many time next Madre Maestra next to the river that flows into campus flows with waste this what backs up to the underpass and the manhole pups off. which makes it a driving hazard.Keep away from Estrella Saladah and 27 Febrero. Also Estrella Saladah in the Area of Hobra Publica just before Ochoa.even when its not raining the street are full of sewage, many building also dump laundry room water into the gutters, This latter problem is also Present in La Trinitaria the pipes are out in the open, sanitation is a unkown word. With the next election maybe, those with some brains and qualification in City Planning will stept up to organize, I am surprised that this town is 150 years behind the rest of th world.

And I thought that trait only applied to driving!

I just read the title to this thread ("10 Dirtiest Cities"), and noticed it's misleading, it should actually read the "10 Most Contaminated Cities". Lead is a contaminant, not dirt. Not trying to change the thread, but have you noticed that there are no vultures in the DR? Maybe the quoted poster could edify us on this situation. I've visited many South and Central American countries, and a very familiar sight are the hundreds of buzzards hovering around in circles, high above a spot where the dead swollen carcass of an animal is lying on the ground...
