Thumbs down Schools and University.....Teaching Ecoterrorism?

I have been conplainning to every agency here in Santiago, the last I am trying is the health Department. At each step, either the Ayuntamiento or Louis Nunez has keep them from investigating my complain, that my health like many of my niegbors is been affected by the constant cement dust in the air that settles everywhere . There is a old man with heart problem that now is having kidney problem he can not affort the cost of meds. I was in the Clinica Cibao in November. Dominican are either not recieving the proper education or choose to ignore safety issues. Crassy- now seems to be the new word that replaced Communist to discredit those that oppossed the controlling agencies that seems not to work... those non-producing public employees that are a stone, that are onother stone el macuto esta replejo. This country is set up for a rude awaking. The tourist will eventually stop coming due to the polution.... New construction when no safty at the beaches will kill the sea life.

Maria - I realize this is a problem - the obvious lack of interest in protecting the environment here - but what does that have to do with universities teaching ecoterrorism?

And just where is this happening? What part of the city. There IS a "Fiscalía del Medio Ambiente" in the "Palacio de Justicia" ..this is not something the Ayuntamiento can help you with.
There is also the SOECI = the Sociedad Ecológico del Cibao who have a loud voice.
With no details, this is a tough one to assist.

Luis, you are correct. Last Tuesday, some residents of the area in question came to the weekly SOECI board meeting (Alida is on the board) with graphic representation of the problem in the neighborhood, pictures and video clips.

Supposedly the cement plant was required to buy and install filters which the never did.

The DR government partially funds SOECI, bit I don't know what kind of influence they have on policy and enforcement.

The SOECI website: Sociedad Ecológica del Cibao (SOECI) 30 años en la conciencia ambiental dominicana.

AH, so she does live out by the factory!!! Of course.

Some of our medical and engineering students got together and examined the air downwind of the cement factory and found incredible amounts of dust and high TB and lung disease rates in the area.

Maybe some ambitious lawyer can make a case....By the way, it is widely rumored that Cementos Cibao is no longer the property of Huascar Rodríguez, in fact it is supposed to have been sold to Cementos Colón, a Colombian group!!

I am in Reparto Universitario, Calle #3 and 1 as you enter Santiago have been to all city agencies here and it seems that the shepre of influence and pressure been great. I need help from somewhere else. I have been shut -up. This been going on fir bout a year and half. Medio anbiente has been force to take a report when a police-officer came to their office but did nothing to fallow up.

I just spoke with Alida, and got some clarification.

SOECI has been aware of the situation for a while. They brought it up with the local environmental authorities, who asked for real evidence.

SOECI asked the company to do an environmental impact study, and have gotten blown off (surprised?)

Within the last two weeks, SOECI sent two technicians into the neighborhood to collect evidence (same folks from PUCMM Hillbilly referred to?). Among other things, they took pictures and videos. It was Thursday at the SOECI general meeting (not the Tuesday board meeting), that the findings were presented to the Society, the videos and pictures. The plan on asking the local environmental authorities to come to the Society and discuss the problem.

Keep in mind the Society is partially funded by the DR government. I hope that means the government will pay some attention to them.

I suggest that concerned folks join SOECI and participate with them. They are a fine, honest concerned organization. But their single biggest obstacle that prevents greater successes is APATHY. Get involved.
