I know there is a list of environmental needs as long as one's arm, but somehow I have the feeling that 'tree replanting' (as per your earlier description) is going to elicit the interest of the average local population far more than 'clean up'. I base this on the reaction of people in PP when the carolina trees were recently cut down in PP's Parque Central. I put a post on this thread at the time (number 27) which has the links to 3 articles explaining the background to the issue.
Roberto and his stupid new palm trees
But I know that all aspects of protecting the environment are important. Perhaps now with Garry in his new post there is hope for an overall co-ordinated plan which examines how one aspect of environmental protection can lead in to others. It's the co-ordination and overall vision which is crucial.

For what it's worth, I know a ton of middle level government workers that are impressive as hell. While lots of employees are changed every 4 years, there are TONS of employees that have been in the same offices for many years.
They are the ones that maintain some resemblance of continuity in their offices, and they are also the ones that do the lions share of the work.
I'm frequently amazed at how upbeat they can be, given they are constantly fighting the powers that be that make stupid decisions.
I have personally seen these middle level permanent employees on many occasions give a good "boche" to a politically appointed department head, who then skitters back to their office with their tails between their legs.
Those people are the ones that give me reason to believe that things WILL get better!!

As soon as I get internet at home (this week fingers crossed) I can help edit, polish or translate from Spanish to English. Let me know as I would love to help.

Hi JD,
Do you have an interest in environmental issues, and do you think your contacts might have as well, or at least be useful to Garry's efforts?
If so, could you contact him?
As I have little knowledge, as of yet, and really am only reporting the progress of their programs, it would be more efficient and practical if you had direct contact with him.
Of course, I would be more than glad to introduce you, or take you over there, if that is preferable.
Regards.

Thanks, MaineGirl.
Everyone on DR1 knows of your excellent language skills.
That truly is a wonderful offer.
I have emailed the whole program prospectus to Keith, and he seems to not feel that translating is a problem.
I can't imagine him having the same command of the lingo, that you have, but who knows?
I'm sure he will contact you or respond, once he sees your offer.
Muchas gracias.
PS: If you are interested in a copy, please advise me by PM with your email address and I will send it to you.

I sort of made a big deal of the skills, I can tell. You'll be pleased to know that the older I get the less I know.

You have provided us with accurate translations for years.
That's not what I call making a big deal of your skills.
It's putting them to good use, and many have benefited from your help.

Hi all!
It is nice to see that this thread has some interest and some pro-active supporters. I am also encouraged by the amount of views. (Nice thread name Rocky.) Garry had no idea.
To help us on DR1; if you call Garry or others, it might help to add a little post that you have done so. This could help us on DR1 that are working with Garry to kind of monitor how communications are going. Garry has not been a DR1 follower, nor have most of the others in this project so OUR support and comments may not get to him. HOWEVER.... Rocky has impressed on them that DR1 HAS BEEN AND CAN BE a very powerfull group. Please do not feel "snubbed" if you do not receive an answer via phone or whatever. Feel free to PM me.
ALSO... Rocky has been somewhat ill, but has helped this new opportunity with FULL vigor when he should be getting a little more rest. We hope to become better organized soon and perhaps a DR1 communications liaison person(s) may be desired.
We are looking to have a meeting in the next week or so, but I would like to have a general idea of how many would be interested in attending.
Thank you, Ringo

It's certainly not for lack of interest.
It's a language barrier problem.

Carlos, landscape architect?
Looking for references for this man.
Grew up in Sosua area. Speaks english. Studied some in France. Gave me a couple of references and will see some of his work this Friday. Best way that I can describe him... looks like a left over hippy from 1960s. (not being a bad thing, so no offense.)
He is very concerned about the enviornment and what has/is happening in the North Coast area. Could be a good source for us.
Regards, Ringo.
