By the way, the latest analysis shows that for the last 5 years, there has been a year on year increase in forest cover in the DR. Study done by folks in Germany I know, using satellite data.

A few days ago I read that they're going to re launch the "Quisqueya Verde" plan, and that they are going to plant 30,000 trees. I hope that it is actually carried through. This deforestation thing should be a priority for the government. I propose that maybe w/ the money that Leonel keeps wasting in ads for his re election campaign, perhaps he blackboard ads should be posted around in the streets, on the television, on the church...to at least bring some awareness of the NEED to protect our forest and rivers.

I wonder why the secretary of environment hasn't launch a campaign like this, and in addition, a campaign to bring awareness of the need to keep our country clean!

In keeping with this topic the following article states that forests do lessen the impact of hurricanes.

Quote:
Haiti, which has been stripped of trees, remains a cautionary tale. The difference between the lush forests in the Dominican Republic and the rocky hillsides on the other side of Hispaniola in Haiti is clear. Hurricane Jeanne in 2004 caused 19 deaths in the Dominican Republic and hundreds in Haiti.
