Here's another one.

Land Hermit Crab

Regarding habitat, some are aquatic and some are land crabs. You'd have to do some more research. Some people are really into hermit crabs, they even have Meetup groups for hobbists! Caribbean hermit crab - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

They are kind of cute... if they could sing merengue, instead of just calypso that would great! YouTube - Kiss the Girl - The Little Mermaid - Kiss de Girl - Lyrics

Speaking of wildlife in the DR, has anyone had any experience with the wild hog, or javelin? In the time of Buccannering they were extremely prevelent on the island and Dominican friends tell me they do exist yet today. At ione time they provided a substantial food source for pirates and Spanish settlers.

The real richness and diversity is in birds, insects and reptiles. I also wonder which species have been lost.
I thought manatees were on the endangered species list?
