On Cnn.com

Rio De Janeiro with 45,000 cases.

Could happen in the D.R. too?

Default Dengue in the DR

We have friends and relatives that have had dengue who live in Santo Domingo and in Jarabacoa, but so far don't have any contacts with people that had it on the North coast. All have survived and were reported to have the milder form of the disease. As to if such an epidemic could happen in the DR like the one being faced in Brazil, I cannot speculate.

My daughter contracted Dengue in December 2007' We were in Punta Cana, Luckily, My Insurance company had a cab waiting outside the resort before i even hung up the phone with them to take her to the hospital 25 minutes away.
It was to this day, the most scariest thing i ever faced in my life.

More information via cnn.com

This could happen in the Dominican Republic or any other tropical country.

Ringo, enough about Brazil. You made the point. If this thread is to stay open, it will discuss dengue in the DR, not Brazil.

Yes, dengue can occur in any tropical country. It has occurred in the DR, and likely will again. My own wife had it in SD in the late 1990s.

The question in my mind is, just how big or small is the problem in the DR. According to PAHO, as of March there had been more dengue cases reported (to the hemispheric epidemiological surveillance system) this year in Puerto Rico (772) than the DR (0). But I don't for one minute believe that there have been zero dengue cases in the DR in 2008...

Keith:

The posts and information, that I tried to refer to, was about Dengue Fever/virus. Dominican Republic related? The information about the virus just happens to be in some another country. I guess that the other country's Dengue virus and situation has no relevance in the Dominican Republic or to anyone other then that country.

No, Ringo, wasn't saying that. Was just saying enough about Brazil. You want to discuss dengue in the DR, fine. This is DR1, not Brasil1.
