Yikes - those things can be deadly! I always imagined them to be much bigger.

Nice pictures Curt. I just saw them after I got back here. By the way, it was good to see you guys, although it wasn't anywhere near long enough. Keep up the great work, and I'll see you in June.

Are you talking about the Man of War or the broom/mop ?

lol Sorry Chirimoya I am in one of those silly moods. Worked on the pool today and think I inhaled to much chlorine.

Back to Hummingbirds...The ruby throated is very common here in New Hampshire but I haven't seen it wintering over in the DR yet. I'll try to catch some pics when it returns here to NH, we generally have lots of them sucking nectar. The Hispanolian Emerald, the Antillean Mango and Vervain are all visitors to our Las Terrenas gardens. Has anyone tried a hummingbird feeder? It's a red plastic flower filled with sugar syrup. It should draw them in if you have other flowers around. The ruby throated love them here.

Hummingbird feeders are hard to find here in the DR, pricey if you find them. What we do is use a plastic container, an old "tang" container that has a screw on top. We take a hot nail and make three holes two inches up from the bottom. Then using the same hot nail to make a central hole in the screw on top. Stick a 16" long wire through the lid and make a bend in it inside the lid, so as to hang it vertical. Using a red magic marker paint a faux flower around each hole. Fill it with sugar water and watch the hummingbirds come. There are many families that visit and they can get very territorial, fending off and chasing each other around. To see a little young hummingbird come and feed is amazing. We clean the feeders once a week, twice a week when it gets hot.

Here is an example of our homemade hummingbird feeder:

Thanks all, I'll tell my wife .....it's her design after I failed at several attempts to use two soda containers. It was a mess.
I'll also try and get some pictures when the families squabble around the feeders. It's trully amazing, reminds me of Alfred Hitchcocks birds, there are so many at once.
