In the DR campos the folks would make 'una jiguera' to fetch water sort of a bowl to also use to pour water in the bath, or the ones with the long neck were used to carry water to the 'conuco' fields. They grow in different sizes and shapes.

My aunts would take one of those round 'fruits' and cut them carefully in two, for two bowls, scrape all the meat out of them and let them dry before using them as bowls.
So its a fruit, but not comestible.
Is what is called in french gourde "calebasse" or calabassa in africa o calabaza en espanol; gourd in formal english.

Default Calabash

It is a Calabash Tree and Fruit. And yes, the fruit is made into bowels when it is cut in half, cleaned out and dried. Or birds nests when a hole is cut into it when dried. We have raised many a budgie in a Calabash nut nest.

Who remembers who it was that used to close his program with "and good night Mrs Calabash, where ever you are"

In Spanish we call it "almendra", the tree is "una mata de Almendra. My grandmother has one of this tree on her backyard, my friends and my brothers and i used to climbed it, and eat it, it turns your mouth red.
