It appears that the Comisión Ambiental de la Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) and the Academia de Ciencias de la República Dominicana (ACRD) are against the cement factory. 'Al intervenir Luis Carvajal, encargado de la Comisión de Medio Ambiente de la UASD, mostró su asombro por la aprobación del permiso para la construcción de la cementera en Los Haitises, cuando al menos 43 estudios realizados durante los últimos 15 años han rechazado que se le dé un uso de ese tipo' namely 43 studies carried out in the last 15 years have rejected the use of the land for this type of purpose.

I've driven to Los Haitises and observed its wonders. Re the cement plant, it sounds like they are planning a Giant Cement Elephant. With oil and gas prices rising, and not likely to ever return down again, the cost of transporting cement throughout the DR will be prohibitive. Exports will suffer a similar fate. I think we should think Mafia and bury this project in a huge cement block and drop it to the bottom of the ocean along with its government supporters.
