Default fruits of the DR and PR

Hi, I know that numerous types of fruits & vegetables grow on the islands of Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. I'm curious to know however, if Cherry trees grow (or if they could be grown) on these islands. The cherries I'm most interested in growing are the dark, sweet cherries (Bing). So please tell me, would I be able to grow a cherry tree on one of these islands? Specifically, I'd be growing the fruits on PR, but I think that growing conditions would be similar on the 2 islands.
Thanks, Greg

Not that I know of. You might check the climate required for cherries. They grow strawberries here..but not apples, peaches or plums...

There is a tropical cherry called an acerola. Great fruit, raw, or made into a jelly...

If you don't speak spanish just say
"discuplme, hay alquien qui hable ingles?"

there are plenty of people there who do... including the director.

I am sure that they will be happy to answer your questions for you,

The DR, falls into Zone 10-11, some berries require a minimum amount of cold days before they will produce fruit. ( Blueberries, Rasberries etc.) although there are some varieties that need very little.

Cherry, and/or Cherry type fruits that can or do grow well are:

Barbados Cherry ( these are easily found all over the Island ).

Cherry of the river grand ( aka Cereza Brazileño )

Grumichama, although it taste more like a grape, does grow well here.

Jaboticaba also can grow here, also taste a bit like a grape.

and finally :

The Capulin Cherry I attempted to grow from seed, it sprouted and was doing ok, but, turned brown, Since I had no cultivation information on how to start from seed, who knows what caused it to die, maybe it was the heat, or too much water, or maybe It needed to be transplanted into the ground. I feel that the Capulin could grow here in the DR.
