Default Concert for Los Haitises this Sunday July 19

My Dominican nephew just sent me this link on Facebook for the Concert for Los Haitises this Sunday. It's at Plaza Espana in SD's Colonial Zone.
Musica por los Haitises | Facebook
The Facebook group has an amazing 4,600+ 'fans'.

Are those of you in SD seeing these T-shirts being worn?

Causes on Facebook | Yo apoyo la lucha por la preservacion de Los Haitises. NO A LA CEMENTERA !! NO A QUISQUEYA GRIS !!

The original facebook group has 36,000+ members! It's the largest DR-related facebook group as far as I can tell.

So what did people think of the concert? I went and was really impressed that there were so many people and so much cooperation. I think the event was pretty historic in a way, even if it doesn't result in closing the cement plant, it was still incredible that so many young Dominicans got together for an organised protest to fight against something they believed to be unjust. Really, really impressive!

What was the turn out like? 1000, 5000, 10 000+??? Just Curious, had I been in the country, definately would have gone. As far as support goes, it is good, I'm sure there was equal support for the cause as for the music. Would be nice to see more public outcry over important issues.

As for facebook, I guess 36000 is pretty big for a group/cause - especially a quasi-political one (I say quasi, because the music factor distracts one from the cause). There are a couple of others that are up there, there are about 36000 fans of the Dominican Republic, and close to the same amount for "reanumos 1 000 000 de dominicanos en facebook".

Another thing I have noticed, I have a page with 5000 people on it, so pretty much anything going on Facebook DR related will make it my way, is that in the past week or so there have been a good number of groups/pages taking aim at issues, such as corruption, blackouts ect. If facebook helped get Obama elected, it could definately help mobilize people towards common causes, even if it is mainly the middle/upper class youth, it could branch out. Will be interesting to watch.

Go to "post reply" instead of quick reply. You'll need to have the photos uploaded somewhere, and post the url for the photos, and all should be good. You can use photo bucker or something of the sort.

Who was the closer for the concert? Tony?

Thanks domi,

For the time being I have the pic blocked by work, but will check it when I get home.

Maybe next one could be an "unplugged" concert in protest of the power outages.

Thanks for the tip with the photos! The event was headlined by Son Abril, but Marel Alemany, Calor Urbano, Xiomara Fortuna as well as a ton of other bands played.

Here's another photo for you now I've got the hang of it!

Remolacha.net reports that even though the concert seemed to be a success curiously enough there was no mention at all (zero mention) on major newspapers like Listin Diario and El Caribe. Diario Libre and Hoy apparently did mention it, but buried within the entertainment sections.

Here's a link to their article.
