El General (Panamanian) invented reggeaton.. credit where it's due.. insofar as music can actually be invented and isn't a 'natural' development of other styles and rythms

I have some links that reflect both our stories to some extent.. I would still say it's a matter of where/when you start calling it reggeaton. To me that would be with EL General..

Premio lo nuestro and latin grammys are garbage. In the merengue genre they have had great artists nominated and who wins? Olga Tañon? What?! Olga Tañon didn't even have a new CD out. I personally wanted Toño Rosario to win. And those songs you talk about la vaca and popola are by those new groups. I see that you have not listened to the beautiful songs by Fernando Villalona, Sergion Vargas, and Alex Bueno among others. Just like reggaeton has it's players that sing garbage, so does merengue. Please don't say that all Dominican merengues talk about popolas and vacas. And please don't say that Puerto Rican merengue is better than Dominican merengue. Please! And it is not that you made it popular. Ever heard of payola? It happens with most American radio stations that play Hispanic music. Especially La Mega.

I so agree with Dragonfly's post. I wasn't going comment but I just want to remind Puerto Ricans (who I think have great music in their own right don't get me wrong) if it weren't for Toño Rosario who moved to PR when he formed his own band in the early 90's there would be nothing to boast about when it comes to merengue from PR. Merengue began to have renewed popularity in PR thanks to Toño.

There are a few groups from PR that I like and they hardly get the recognition they deserve such as Limi-t 21 and Grupo Mateo's but instead music from Elvis Crespo is promoted and marketed which in my opinion is a misrepresentation of merengue music.

Reggaeton is fad music it comes and goes whenever an artist or group comes around to promote it. It doesn't interest me but you know as they say like anything 'esa música tiene su público'.

Good Dominican merengue artists:

Rubby Pérez, Alex Bueno, Jossie Esteban, Los Toros Band, Fernando Villalona, Los Hmnos. Rosario. These folks have been around for a while and probably will outlast current and future reggaeton artists.

LDG.

I defenatelly agree that premio lo nuestro and latin gramys are garbage because when they where going to anounce the best regaeton singer, even tho every body were yelling "TEGO, TEGO, TEGO " who they called???? El General jajajaja give me a break, the last CD el general came up with that i can remember was Juana pelame la banana and that was who knows how long... Well anyways To tell u the truth i have listen to all those merengueros i can even tell u the name of the songs they sing and part of the songs too, why?? because im a merenguero myself... the thing is that i have to deffend what i think is right, and not let ppl burn puerto ricans like that, especially that comment that we saturate everything, if we do ppl like it..

Default couldnt let you get away with this one

Yeah those premio shows in spanish are crap...they discriminate, when it somes to tropical music categories they vote for songs that are old as sh%t and that obviously dont deserve to win. YOU cannot even seriously believe that pr put merengue on the map...not so missy!! Es algo muy dominicano y no lo puedes negar. but on the other hand, maybe the elvis crespo or the olga tanon music TO YOU sounds better than some of our music. para los gustos se hicieron los colores, your ears, your choice.

*****RE: that dumb a$$ popola song, that girl is dominican??????? ****

Oh, about pr merengues singing about love, gils' beauty & what not, so does dominican merengue since b4 puertoricans even knew what merengue was.

You guys have salsa (for the most part cuz we have some dope salseros too as well as colombia, venezuela etc...) please dont try to claim merengue too. JUST NOT ACCURATE. whats next, gonna take credit for putting bachata on the map??

It wasn't Toño, Conjunto Qusqueya was in Puerto Rico way longer, also Jossie Esteban was there way before Toño. Actually, Olga Tañon started off as a satellite of Jossie Esteban, also Caña Brava. You're right thou, Dominican bands stationed in PR where the ones that sparked the merengue movement in PR.

Merengue Bomba does have similarities with reggaeton in that, at the beginning is a " novelty', a sensation, like Elvis Crespo, then the same crap over and over again " gets old", it gets whack. Dominican merengue has distinct styles. You have Oro Solido, Toño, Peña Suazo, El Jeffrey, Julian. They are all very different from each other, they have depeloped their own style, so that's why Dominican merengue in general doesn't get old with me.

You have different " revolutions" in Dominican merengue that gives it a new flava. Like barito saxophone revolution of Oro Solido in 1993, and then the Robert Vargas's " perico tiguere" in 1999( i think). After Robert came Krisspy, Aguacate and all that. All that is variation, variation is the clue for the longtime success of any musical genre.

Premio lo nuestro, etc, all that garbage is runned by Mexicans and some Cubans that kiss their arse, they don't know jack s&^%&t about merengue and its distinct flavors. Actually " lo nuestro " really means, " lo nuestro lo mexicano". So people, please don't watch univision, that channel should change its name to " mexicovision", because it just caters to their majority Mexican audience. Have you seen all those horrible "banda music" commercials that they place even in the East Coast??

What comes closer to really give credit to Dominican music talent is premios Casandra in DR.
