As far as the legality of this, I am in the gambling business in this country and can assure you it will be perfectly legal here.
SKY,

First off, I was not referring to you. I was referring to the people whom you were expecting to take you up on your bet.

Second, as I wrote, the rosters are not known and won't be know until the end of the MLB season. Some of the players you think might be playing, may not even be available due to injuries and/or contract restrictions.

Thank you for the information regarding the legality of gambling contracts in the DR. In the US I believe they are illegal in most states.

BTW, I think you were being a bit presumptuous in your opening remark.

SP - Johan Santana
SP - Carlos Zambrano
SP - Freddie Garcia
SP - Victor Zambrano
SP - Carlos Silva/Jeremi Gonzalez
RP - Francisco Rodriguez (K-Rod)
RP - Ugueth Urbina
SP/RP - Gustavo Chacin
1B - Magglio Ordonez
2B - Cesar Izturis/Miguel Cairo
SS - Carlos Guillen/Omar Vizquel
3B - Melvin Mora/Edgardo Alfonso
LF - Miguel Cabrera
CF - Bobby Abreu
RF - Richard Hidalgo
C - Ramon Hernandez/Victor Martinez/Henry Blanco

You have to get through this, before even talking about beating Yankees.

You're quite funny, toneloc. DR's alternates could out-bat Venezuela. I'm quite aware that you love to stir the pot with your anti-DR baseball comments, so on that note, I won't bite the bait anymore. Thanks for the laugh, though.

Whoa!!! When did I say anything anti-DR? I've only stated baseball facts.

The DR team does NOT have great pitching after Pedro. Nor is there a catcher or centerfield. Can you admit that? Or does your pride blind you from facts?

ANYONE who knows anything about baseball knows, if you're not strong up the middle (C, P, 2B, SS, CF) defensively, you will lose. Offense DEFINITELY ain't everything. Don't be surprised or shocked if all those great DR hitters do nothing. Great pitching/defense shuts down great offense. That applies to every sport. That's not anti-DR, that's just a fact.

I could give a rat's *** if the USA wins. It's USA's game, it's supposed to win. I probably won't even watch it.

Default No Doubt About USA

Hey Toneloc, there's no doubt that the US team will be the one to beat in the World Baseball Classic. But the teams have not yet been set so it could happen - as it did with basketball in the Olympics - that the USA will field a stinker of a team (relatively speaking, of course). Remeber, players not only have to be willing but also have to get permission from their respective clubs to participate.

One of the stats posted during the All-Star home-run contest was that there are about 109 Dominican players currently playing for MLB teams. I think that gives DR enough of a pool to be able to field a great team. Now, based on an ESPN poll I look at a couple of months ago the concensus is for the USA to win although most people that were asked (about 12,000) said they wanted to see a USA vs DR finals. I assume it's because they believe the DR team will be that good.

BTW, Randy Johnson? Are you crazy? Roger Clemens? - Doesn't his kid have a game that week? ehehehehehe!

Here are the brackets so far, Cuba still up in the air.

Pool 1 - Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan
Pool 2 - Puerto Rico, Cuba, Italy, Panama
Pool 3 - Canada, Mexico, South Africa, USA
Pool 4 - Australia, DR, Netherlands, Venezuela

Ok, let's forget Schilling, Johnson. We know all of the players aren't playing for the USA. However, what makes you think the same doesn't apply of the other teams as well? Pedro has a frail arm. Manny, ARod, Vlad, Tejada, Bonds, Jeter all command upwards of $100 million each. You think their employers won't have something to say as well?

1. Albert Pujols over Magglio Ordonez hands down;
2. Alfonso Soriano over both Izturis and Cairo, without question;
3. Miguel Tejada over Guillen and Vizquel;
4. Aramis Ramirez and/or Adrian Beltre no question over Mora/Alfonso;
5. Manny, Vlad and Guillen over Cabrera/Abreu/Hidalgo;
6. I'll give you the catcher position without question.

Bats in hand, the DR line-up cannot be equaled by anyone.

Frank, comparing players one for one will give the edge to DR players. However, as has been pointed out already, Venezuela has some really tough pitchers.
Johan, Zambrano, Garcia - YO! Scarry!!!!

Furthermore, this is one TEAM playing against another team! Just because Dominican players put up superstar numbers does not mean that they'll gel as a team and play their arses off. Sure, you can count on Tejada to play 1000% (yes, I meant thousand), but can you picture Manny going all out?

BTW, I heard over one of the recent Yankee broadcasts that the Boss (AKA George Steinbrenner) will not permit any of his players to participate in this tornament - See ya A-Rod!

And here's what these guys don't get, Steinbrenner isn't the ONLY owner thinking the exact same way. They are not anymore interested in these highly-paid investments taking chances with ruining their seasons over this tournaments, than these same dudes riding motorcycles or jet-skis. Pujols, Manny, Pedro, Ortiz, Tejada, all of them fall into this area.

Do not be surprised if players must sign contract waivers in order to participate. Meaning, if you get injured during this World Cup or fail to make the opening day roster, you forfeit money. Let's see which DR stars sign that waiver. Some of the Americans will sign it, hence the depth issue.

The US team can still win it all without ARod, Jeter, Bonds, Sheffield, Schilling, and Johnson. Can the DR do the same?

Going by your theory, you must remember that this theory applies to all teams. Now think about Dominican pride, and how baseball is the lifeblood of most Dominican men. Who do you think will put forth a better effort to represent their country than the DR? My money, hands down, is on the DR if we're talking teamwork. Anyone whose money is on Venezuela against the DR, how come Venezuela can never beat them in the Carribean series?
