I will definitely let you know what I think when I get back. I was told the rooms are nicer than Sunshine - Carina, what would you say? We are talking budget hotels here of course!

I donīt think you have much to worry about. Most hotels in the town Puerto Plata are quite simple. Maybe POP Beach and Lomar are the exeptions.
But it is christmas time, and they will all be empty, as locals spend time with their families.
So worst case, pay for 1 night, and try and if you are ok then stay, if not then move.
Puerto Plata Beach is 1.100 pesos, but then you have 1 bedroom, 1 livingroom, balcony, kitchenette, bath...

Rest of the hotels are in the price you mentioned..

Thanks Carina. Think my friend has only put down a one night deposit so I shall see how I go.

As I said before, it's just somewhere to rest my head really - that's why I don't bother checking into an AI as I won't be at the hotel that much - would much rather spend the money on car hire and get out and about!

Looking forward to being somewhere slightly warmer than London at the moment! Less than a week to go now - can't wait. Hopefully I will get to meet up with some one DR1'ers this visit. Darlene mentioned a concert on Wed 28th - I may well try and make it to that.

ok I found my reciept for the hotel in POP...and i must be brain dead...it didnt start with a V.

It was the Costa Atlantica. Actually the reciept says
Condominios Costatlantica
Inversiones Costatlantica

and it was 1,100 pesos

Again i would say if you are not looking for frills and just want a place to sleep and hang out IN YOUR ROOM. i think its a good deal. they are gated, with a guard. That same night we asked at the Iberostar hotel in POP and thet wanted 6000 pesos for the night. Although it is an all inclusive. We were going to eat at the DR1 dinner and we weent staying the next day to hang out at the beach.....so the place we stayed worked perfect. They had a huge thick bedspread and covers. and the bed was huge!. The ac was blasting and we needed the covers!. I like that! Few times you need covers in the dr!

OK - I ended up staying at the Montesilva for the whole durstion of my trip.

I found it to be a clean, friendly, cheap and cheerful hotel. My room was a good size with a variable air con unit, cable tv & hot water.

The owner is an italian guy who lives across the road and is very friendly and helpful. There is security at night so I felt safe.

I think there are 12 rooms altogether and there is also a small pool although I didn't use it.....was clean though......just didn't have enough time!

For a budget hotel - it's comparable to the Sunshine - perhaps a little nicer.

The only disadvantage is that if you don't have a car - then you will struggle to get a motoconcho as its off the mail road - and I wouldn't want to be walking to the main road alone at night. So you will need to get a taxi.

800 pesos a night for one person in the room - 1000 for two.

Does anybody know if Hotel Victoriano is okay to stay for a night ? Looks like it has a very central location in town. Is there okay security, and is it " guest friendly" ?

Good value for cheap. I think I payed 10/nt. My buddy payed 5/nt because the old girl at the counter recognized him from past patronige. As far as security goes nobody is going to get by the girls at the front desk without a major fight. I've seen them in action. There like a couple of p!ssed off wolverines.
