Ambassadors: No Respect for DR?
You've all read the latest news....seems like France, Canada and Spain have made some not so flattering comments about the DR. Now they have Morales Troncoso on the spanish ambassador's back screaming for 'respect' and an apology because she said no one follows the law here.
OH MY GOD! HOW DARE SHE SAY THAT...THERE IS NO CORRUPTION IN THIS COUNTRY, ESPECIALLY FROM GOVERNMENT GROUPS...EVERYONE HERE IS A LAW ABIDING CITIZEN...EVEN THE ONES THEY DEPORT FROM THE U.S. FOR CRIMINIAL PROBLEMS ARE ALSO INNOCENT....MR. TRONCOSO SHOULD MAKE ALL THE AMBASSADORS GET DOWN ON THEIR KNEES AND BEG FOR FORGIVENESS FOR SAYING THERE IS A PROBLEM HERE WITH UPHOLDING THE LAW!!!!!
Ok, enough sarcasm....
Now the Cardenal here is also screaming 'have RESPECT'
My experience in this country is that when someone accuses you of being disrespectfull chances are you have caught a dominican with his/her hands in the cookie jar or you have said the truth (and the truth hurts.)..they on the other hand dont know how to get out of the situation you have put them in so they use one of two tactics 1) You are an extranjero and are against/talk bad about/think yourself better than dominicans...or...2) You are showing a lack of respect towards them (by calling a thief a thief), and they being so noble, righteous, honourable are offended and thereby you have shown disrespect to all dominicans and their flag. Both cases involve some 'mob mentallity'.
Last bit...im ranting on the respect thing...here are some examples 1) motoconcho wrongly crashes into my car (breaks window, back and door has hole+dented and scratched), tries to get away but is stopped, has the nerve to want me to pay for slight damages to his bike so when i ask him if he's crazy (or if he is going to pay for my car)...he starts screaming that i have no respect for him to everyone around (and some of those onlookers start 'si, si , respecto, respecto). 2) buying woman besides me buys a pineapple from a street vendor for 30pesos, i pick one the same size and get charged 50pesos...when i complain and ask why , i am told my pineapple is larger....when i hold my pineapple next to the womans pineapple to show they are the same size, i ask for may money back and tell him to keep his pineapple...the vendor then tells me to show him respect. REMINDS ME OF MR TRONCOSO AND THE CARDENAL
FINALLY 1) SHOULD THE AMBASSADORS APOLOGIZE? 2)WHATS UP WITH THE WORD 'RESPECT' DOWN HERE?

Regardless of the fact that everything you said is true and that is in fact the way a lot of Dominicans are doesn't divert from the fact of the way things are to be done.
The Diplomatic Corps from ALL countries have a SET procedure that MUST be followed in everything they say and do. This is the Diplomatic Corps "rules" and usually followed. At times the Diplomatic Corps from ALL countries step out of bounds of those imposed "rules" and when that happens the offended country, due to those same "rules", has every right to get belligerent. Because of those imposed "rules" the government of both Spain and Canada will more than likely submit a letter of apology because once again that is what the "rules" require. Watch and see.
The "church" also has an established procedure that is supposed to be followed but that never happens here.

Interesting stuff.
Rick is correct. Diplomats have channels through which they are expected to communicate. Ambassadors are not public figures. They are the eyes, ears, and mouthpieces of their respective states. They are expected to do their jobs behind closed doors...usually.
Having said that...I have to say I have been laughing at these stories.
The truth hurts.

Kind of reminds me of when the outgoing U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) director, Elena Brineman, made all those statements concerning the DR. As an outgoing director the DR government had no avenue to complain so they openly complained to the press. In their complaints that had to say, she is right but
because no protocol was broken.
Agreeing with Scandall I too am laughing at the statements as I did with the ones against Ms Brineman.
The truth can be such a painful and humiliating thing. Hehehehehehehehehehehe.

Funny, Rick. I was thinking of Brineman too.
Great minds think alike.

or idiots seldom differ. As anyone knows, you are not allowed to critize anything Dominican unless you are Dominican, and even then, you have to make sure it's not personaL.

Much decorum with these politicos but no substance. Example according to Diario Libre a bunch of deputies receiving classes on etiquette while many are up to their necks in corruption. Its all show.

In post #3 I made reference to Canada and that was a mistake and I apologize for that error. It should have been Spain, France and Mexico. Needless to say there are other countries.
Rick
Scandall did you get the distinct feeling we were called idiots? Hehehehe
