If I want to rent a car in the DR and be fully covered by insurance, without going through my credit card company, what's my best option?

Default Tropicar in POP?

Has anyone rented recently from Tropicar in POP? I'm thinking of renting a jeepeta from them in a few weeks. Their rates seem reasonable and they're offering a discount for paying cash which is fine with us. Just wondering if anyone has had any dealings with them.

I remember a number of posts from quite a while ago referring to someone at Tropicar named Joshua. Not sure if he's still there or if there is someone else who is reliable to deal with.

Any suggestions or info would be greatly appreciated. BTW we want a jeepeta for 4 adults for one week, middle of April.

National & Alamo - Santo Domingo Motors.
Hertz - No idea.
Eurocar, Avis, Budget, Nelly and ? - One group.

I think you will find that some of the larger more established brands are becoming very aggressive with pricing, especial for compact and medium sized vehicles.

Best thing to do is email them before you arrive and ask for discounts, pitch them against each other etc.

It's not expensive at all. When i used to rent at POP airport i was booking thru AA.com and getting Aveos and Lancers for about $25 a day with Budget.

Default Try Alamo

I reserved a full-size [Nissan Sentra I think] car at Alamo for $384 for 12 days - with tax and the mandatory Third Party Liability [$5 a day] it comes to $459 for the almost 2 weeks. We always pick up our car in the city because it saves like $100 over the airport - very friendly guys and very easy, their office is at Independencia and Maximo Gomez. It works for us because we have a big family there and someone is always available to pick us up from the airport. One thing we've learned - National and Alamo share that office, and Alamo is usually a lot cheaper, for the same cars......

Be aware with Eurocar that they have a special magnet thing on the ignition key which has to sit a certain way to make contact with the ignition. If it does not, the motor will just spin and spin, like there is something wrong with the battery. They do not explain this to you.

im not sure if they have a branch up near you in Sosua? Try looking on their website. I rented mine from the airport in SDQ and then was able to negotiate a new 2008 Lancer from the local branch in la capital when i was unhappy with the lancer they originally gave me. The key is negotiate with them. Smile and it will go a long way. Let me see what I can dig up.
FYI i have the receipt of my rental here with me
809-549-0942 in airport Las Americas
809-565-4455 in the local office I went to in la capital [Gustavo Mejia Ricart]
I think they have a location in POP
