DR government debates private property access to beaches

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – Legislators in the Dominican Republic are debating whether to allow residents access rights to private property so they can reach beaches, rivers and lakes.

President Leonel Fernandez recently submitted a proposal to amend the constitution, which currently bars people from entering such property.

The proposal has the support of Miguel Vargas Maldonado, leader of the opposition Dominican Revolutionary Party. But several members of both parties rejected the idea and sparked a debate Wednesday.

One of the Caribbean country's biggest draws is its white-sand beaches and turquoise waters along its eastern coast. It is home to dozens of celebrity homes and exclusive resorts.

And according to the Diario Libre the Assembly revoked the right to free public access to beaches, shorelines, rivers, lakes and lagoons.

Seems like the business interests got there way..."Papeleta mata menú" as the saying goes...

Those opposed to access probably own or are partners in beach front property.
