What happen to Leonel's Nobel Peace Prize Nomination
With Americans again sweeping the Nobels in all the true sciences and now also peace prize for a second year in a row, one wonders what happened to Leonel's nomination:
I understand a nomination was submitted and now the Leonel camp is very upset that an underachiever rookie like Obama beat him:
Here are Leonel's nomination achievements:
1)He kept Chavez and Uribe from killing each other and starting a war with his mediation at La Cumbre.
2)He kept Chavez on the brakes. Chavez threatened to invade Spain for the Kings "Callate La Boca" insult. Leonel prevented another war.
3)Leonel is the only Latin president who is still keeping Zelaya alive by mentioning his name and demanding his return to power, even quieting Chavez and Ortega as Zelaya's spokesmen.
4)Leonel has kept the peace in the barrios of Dominican Republic by buying out the gangs, tigueres, padres de familia and PLD base with jobs, funditas full of money, and food boxes. Quite an achievement considering blackouts of 15 or more hours a day and no water.
5)Leonel has prevented a civil war among his cabinet members who are all at each other's throats. This an achievement unmatched by any Latin president, including Kristina, who cannot keep a cabinet member in tow.
6)Leonel did not send soldiers to Irak like warmonger Hipolito Mejia, who sent our glorious army there and did as good or better job than the Marines and came back heroes. But peace is peace man and our left wing population admires cowards anyway, except Jimmy Carter of course.
7)Leonel has prevented a civil war with Haiti by allowing the new Haitian invasion. His do nothing Haiti policy will eventually prove Jimmy Carter right, that we should be merged. Except this will happen by default.
8)Leonel has contributed to peace among the three drug and cocaine cartel powers Colombia, Venezuela and Dominican Republic by allowing free landing rights to all small airplanes carrying the merchandise. No shooting downs.
9)Leonel has helped keep the peace in Ecuador's border with Colombia by sending good will ambassador Isa Conde to train FARC's members in the jungles.
10)Leonel is contributing to peace in the Middle East by allying himself with terrorist nations like Lybia, Cuba, Gaza,Russia, Iran, Nicaragua, Venezuela while condemning Israel the only democracy in the entire Middle East. Leonel also sent a "get well card" to the Lockerbee assasin signed by his entire cabinet and promised him a free burial lot at Cristo Rey cemetery. a Attaboy Leonel!
How did this guy lose to Obama anyway?????

yeah, I wonder what obama would have achieved if he were the president of dominican republic? You think its that easy to manage a country where the people themselves help vote in a corrupt candidate? I have seen it with my own eyes: candidates buy votes, pay people and give the food, phony promises for jobs and rum / entertainment, just to buy their votes. If people accept this behavior from the candidates, then they deserve a corrupt official. The people of this country, themselves, help elect a corrupt official and then they complain later.
Obama would not have done any better if he was the president of this country. On the other hand, I bet if leonel was the president of USA, he would have done exactly, if not better than what obama is doing. Which is "nothing at all".

It all goes back to the political will of the people. Things will change when enough people want them to change.
And not before.
And as long as Dominicans have this belief that the quickest, easiest way to get ahead is to befriend and get a politician elected, it won't change.
Like any other thread relating to politics, I find it funny that I can read the posts and know who said what without looking at the username.
Ideology trumps intellectual curiosity every time.
Obama didn't campaign for this award. He was given it by the Norwegian voters who comprise the Nobel Committee. They decided he deserved it.
He clearly did nothing to deserve it, and should of declined. The man has no body of work either on the domestic nor international stage to merit the honor. Just a bunch of empty, non-substantive "I Have a Dream" speeches that are beginning to grate even on his most ardent supporters.
And if he was given an award as a knee-jerk reaction to 8 years of Bush-Cheney foreign policy, the committee clearly has not done it's homework because Obama is continuing the same failed tactics of nation building and aggressive war-mongering in the Middle East. Makes me wonder why the neo-cons hate him so much.
Fernandez, on the other hand, has done everything in his power to become an international statesman. For a man from such a small Caribbean country riddled with it's own problems, he never misses an opportunity to fly with an entourage of sycophants and leeches to strengthen relations with countries that I'm sure do not consider relations with the DR high on their list of priorities.
We read about it all the time on this site-
"Fernandez strengthens economic ties with Lilliputians-set to open Levi store catering to worlds' tallest midgets in the Zona Franca".
He should get a prize for trying to turn Santo Domingo into Washington Heights with yet another metro already breaking ground. Can't wait to ride that number 1 train from Avenida John F. Kennedy all the way to Herrera.
