Las Praderas withdraw from Santo Domingo

Visit ¨beautiful Las Praderas¨and see the mosquito hatchery cesspool located on Mejia Ricart & Nunes de Caceras. Businesses & homes bordering on this disgrace are being inundated with mosquitos & sickening odors. Over one year ago a gigantic project was started by removing the water from this contaminated very large cesspool. Streets leading to the ocean were torn up to accomodate a permanent drainage system for water that would eventually accumulate. The project was abandoned leaving Nunes de Caceras with construction detours hampering traffic and are still evident today. Then to ad insult to this failed project, that was to be corrected by a drainage system a second body of poluted, stinking water lies within Las Praderas Park. The very large body of putrid dirty brown water is breeding hordes of mosquitos that could introduce Malaria and Dengue fever infections to those unforunate people living in nearby homes. Mosquitoes are responsible for more than 25 million deaths every year around the world. Santo Domingo´s Sindico does nothing to alleviate this horrendous problem. Nor does the President lift one finger to endorse some relief for the suffering residents. Telephone requests to various Governmental Agencies are ignored. Once again the rights of the People are violated by do nothing Politicians that we elected to competently represent us, but only look for their re-election to these cushy high paying jobs.

Why don't the residents form an action group and take matters into their own hands? In fact, why don't you start one? I'm happy to promote the group on DR1 and highlight any progress in the Daily News.

Your "cesspool" has been around since before Bartholomew Columbus (Christopher's brother) founded Santo Domingo in 1496. The "cesspool" is a geological phenomenon, a sink hole or something of the sort, connected to the Isabella river. There's nothing that can be done about it. I remember in 1979, tropical storm Frederick caused the water to surge through the "cesspool" and flooded houses in what is now known as Las Praderas over two stories high. People are not supposed to live there...
Also, not trying to advocate favorably for our anthropod critters, but it is people that introduce dengue and malaria to mosquitoes. They only innocently spread it around. It is our human responsibility to prevent it. So let's not blame mosquitoes ;-)

Good news. The government is building a park there. Major construction is underway and the park should be ready this year. At least the lagoon has been drained, so the mosquito problem is no longer so.
