I could go on and on now but it seems there are too many blind people around who fall for an actor again. Four years ago I also believed in Leonel's words but today's Leonel is different from the president 96-00.
like you said: there are too many blind people around!

So, if people don't agree with your assessment of things it means they are blind. I think you must have selective memory. During the PRD reign of terror the thieves were from top to bottom in the government, whether you are talking about customs, getting a birth certificate....etc. The thieves in the PLD, which there are many, seem only at the top, are far less greedy than the last bunch of theives. The other main difference is the PLD government seems to have a vision for the future, where the PRD's only vision was to create new ways to steal money. Way too many PRD involved with the Drug trade.

@Bob: They are all alike. Rotten from the top to the bottom. Nowadays they just ask for more. The vision that the PLD has is the same as the PRD. They are all just power obsessed and extremely greedy. The PLD seem to be just a little smarter. This way it makes them look nicer.
This goverment received so much benefit and help but they just manage to look good on their own published and falsified reports.
What have they really done except a few cosmetic improvements and the metroproject that generated a lot of black money for some people ?
The main difference for me is: I have to spend more than twice as much to cover the costs of living and receive less quality and of course the mentality of the people in general has worsened. Doctors, lawyers and other clowns with what they call here an academic degree try to suck out the life out of the general public by tripling all the costs for their work because they know public service is as bad as ever.

and...the drug trade ? Do you really think the PLD doesn't get a share of it ?

Sure the alternative is really bad but at least they don't bother you so much to pay for something dominican politics will never archieve.

Man, if it's that bad why do you stay, I know it's probably because of your wife. Many complain about everything no matter, and fail to notice the positive changes because they are cranked about something that affected you personally, so that makes everything bad. I've noticed an improvement when I go through customs, I've noticed a difference when dealing with local government officials, and Yris has noticed numerous small improvements with the school administration. I've noticed in Jarabacoa an government run computer school, many other small things. In case you haven't noticed the cost of living has increased dramatically almost everywhere in the world- you expect the DR to remain immune? I agree with you about the metro. The Sindico in Jarabacoa just built a big house. That family had nothing 20 years ago - PRSC Party. I agree with you that the PLD is corrupt but in my mind they are a far better choice, but I don't get to vote, and I don't believe you get to either.

Mainly it is the other way around. My wife is the one that would like to go somewhere else. I still enjoy the life here it just makes me mad to see creeps like our sindico in charge. So, I just try not to think too much about it or like someone said:

Politics is for people who can not decide things on their own.

From my perspective, the difference now is almost like night and day.
Well, it goes to prove a point: What ever the government, the president, the tyrant or "leader"... it's not just him or her... it's a "cultural" thing, although I don't like to use the word "culture" to justify a negative thing... culture should be a good thing... but anyway, you get the drift... it's an "everybody"-thing. Even those who don't have the power leverage to rake in anything, tend to be part of the problem when their vote becomes corrupted in hopes for a favor, unos chelitos, the wishful outlook of a home or what ever. Just yesterday I again overheard an agitated discussion of locals about whom they will or would give their vote to: "... yo no voy a votal pa el no si no me da mi qualto ete desgraciadito"!
A country gets the president which represents it's people, the president every one and each would be in good and bad.

Still, I think that Leonel at least was well intentioned... exactly! Just as many of his fellow Nationals would... at first. But now, his non-history as of having held no public offices until the presidency, which may at first have been seen as an advantage when he was a candidate, may be becoming his problem as he may not be as firmly seated as it may appear, which in turn may not allow him to take definite action against the big fish in the worst part of the whole corruption scheme, high ranking police, army and political leaders which seem to be not just covering the local drug trafficking but actually promoting it quite directly(?).
Remember the fiscal who got turned into a colador at daylight in Sousa'bajo? Now, have you observed the campaign trails and wondered how easy it could be, just for a nut case, to take out our president or any of the contenders... now imagine how easy it'd be for somebody with some power.

Anyway, the OP's subject wasn't about who we'd like, favor or hate and our reasonings behind it, but about LFR the man, his back ground(s) and so forth, and I would love to read more about that.

... J-D.
