Final Results -- Bulletin 9
The JCE issued the final results at 6pm, 24 hours after the close of the 16 May election.
5,764,387 registered voters
4,086,541 valid votes
Leonel Fernandez (PLD): 2,199,734 (53.83%)
Miguel Vargas (PRD): 1,654,066 (40.48%)
Amable Aristy (PRSC): 187,645 (4.59%)
Eduardo Estrella (PRSD): 19,309 (0.47%)
Guillermo Moreno (MIUCA): 18,136 (0.44%)
Pedro Candelier (PAP): 6,118 (0.15%)
Trajano Santana (PRI): 1,533 (0.04%)

Analyzing the 2008 Dominican election results
Abstention:
5,764,387 registered voters
4,086,541 valid votes (99.34%)
This means there was an abstention of 29%. Not much more than the 27% in 2004.
How candidates did compared to 2004 presidential election:
Leonel Fernandez (PLD): In 2008 -- 2,199,734 (53.83%). This is merely 135,863 more voters from the 2,063,871 (57.1%) he received in the 2004 election. Or 6.5% more.
There were 395,323new voters in 2008 compared to 2004.
The polls said that President Fernandez was especially strong in the younger age groups, so it would be assumed that he captured a large number of the new voters. The fact that he received only 135,863 more voters in 2008 than in 2004, could be interpreted as that he lost thousands of voters that voted for him in 2004.
Miguel Vargas (PRD): 1,654,066 (40.48%). In 2004, the PRD running with Hipolito Mejia received 1,215,928 votes. This means that the PRD received 438,138 more votes than in 2004, for a 36% increase. This also could be interpreted that a less vulnerable candidate than was Miguel Vargas would have forced President Fernandez to go to a second round.
Amable Aristy (PRSC): 187,645 (4.59%)
Eduardo Estrella (PRSD): 19,309 (0.47%)
In 2004, Eduardo Estrella was the candidate for the PRSC. In 2004 the party received 312,493 votes. The 2008 totals show the continued disintegration of the party.

Expatriates vote for Fernandez
154,797 Dominicans in 11 countries and 21 cities registered to vote and 75,700 voted on 16 May (an almost 50% abstention). This compares to 52,440 Dominicans who registered to vote in the 2004 presidential election, for a tripling of registered voters. In 2004, 35,342 Dominicans actually voted, or 71% of the total registered.
In the 10 locations that accounted for 94% of the expatriate vote – New York (58.98%), New Jersey (56.04%), Madrid (63.94%), Boston (62.1%), Puerto Rico (58.8%), Miami (66.81%), Barcelona (61.57%), Philadelphia (53.74%), St. Martin (66.73%) and Panama (75.66%) – the vote was unanimously in favor of President Leonel Fernandez.
President Leonel Fernandez’s bid for reelection received more support abroad percentagewise, than in the DR.

And by the way, Moreno is not corrupt. If you really wanted to vote, he was the option.

Only a partially truth statement because although percentage wise true, the numbers didn't affect the outcome because the numbers are so small. If a newspaper said what you've said we would be criticizing them for inaccuracy.

Did you notice that the Partido Reformista wasn't in the money spree game?
That's the problem, we need the still roaming PRD to fold tent with the big pockets in order to allow these up and coming less corruptible political arms to take hold and shoot for the stars...
Meanwhile my vote is not going to aid corruption...
If only enough people stood home and didn't vote!!! Ahhhhh!! What a message!!!

Lambada, Pichardo and Mr Lu good points made by all.....
I can agree on the first one but your crystal ball is a bit too optimistic on the last two. The PLD and PRD are parties well entrenched in the political system. With tactics such as the nominas cb in place it will not be easy for them to just disappear into smoke as you hope.

Congratulations, DR !! 17may08!!
I was up & about on 17may08 in POP at mid-day - the day after the elections.
* No campaign signs, propoganda, etc. was visible! Any where! During the late night or early AM [probable], the various DR Gov'ts or the parties completely cleaned up 1,000s of tons of seemingly endless, ugly, repititous messes.
* There must have been many tons of useless paper cardboard, etc.
* Many of us are quick to complain. This exc. performance would rival that of any state in the USA under similar circumstances.
* DR, congratulations! Well done.
