Question DR-CAFTA & car prices in the DR

DR-CAFTA went into effect, or should have gone into effect, on Jan. 1,2006, almost 18 months ago.
* Yet, . . . I have noticed no changes whatsoever in the prices of new automobiles in the DR.
* What am I missing?
* Should not cars manufactured in the USA at least be allowed to enter the DR duty free? Japan? Korea?
* Can someone MORE knowlegable come to my assistance? Thank you.

dont be silly they would still sell for 20% over the RRP even if they were given away free to all dealers as a gift.
No such thing as market forces in the DR unless is an excuse for raising prices.

If I remember correctly there is a period of 10 years where the prices are "supposed" to adjust......

Prices are "adjusting" per the schedule, which is 20% per year. The kicker is that the government has raised the registration fees so the 20% you're saving on duties is being collected elsewhere. As a matter of fact the registration fee was raised more than the 20% you'll be saving, thus is actually more expensive to import a car. Yep...E' pa' lante que vamos...
