Not quite, Bob. But if you feel deceived I shall take my licks in public. Let me have it.
With absolutely no oversight or accounting mechanism in place, each Senator has RD$2,000,000 at their disposal monthly (in Jan '08 pesos according to the reference).
So, at RD$2 million per month X 32 Senators....we have a whopping RD$64 million dedicated to our Senators each month (makes you wonder what the actual operating budget is).
Cheers,
RHM

Then let me rephrase, Mr. Smarty-Pants.
The U.S. is among the richest and the DR is among the poorest. I'm not taking a shot at either, just trying to put things in perspective.
Feel better, Nals?

I feel about the same, but now you're only partly right.
Most countries of the world are poorer than the DR, so its hard to see how the DR can be among the poorest when most of the poorest as poorer than the DR by a long shot.
But, whatever.
The senators are.....

U.S. National Debt Clock
How can a country be one of the richest in the world if it owes the most money in the world?

That is the problem much more than the monthly cost of supporting one politician and his staff.
Doesn't seem to bother the voters much from what I csn see. When will THEY tire of the corruption and lack of accountability? That seems to be the real issue.

It does, unfortunately there is a deep sense of apathy and hopelessness for change that cause most to disengage from politics rather than do something about it. When you think about it, what real options do they have? There are no decent politicians they can support and how far would they get starting a new party and relying on funding from the impoverished public?

regardless of ~why~, there doesn't seem to be a move toward changing things.
