Pichardo

"Honestly I wish I could participate in this thread..."

"I wish I could read what was going on in this thread...."

What are my two options?

A) Learn Spanish
B) Find an English language website about the DR

Jmmm... Gee, I wonder where I could find an English language website dedicated to the DR?

Let me think.....Jmm

Communicating in Spanish, where the language is predominantly English, is rude. Renders the majority of community members voiceless and the "hope" to help democracy by including all voices and opinion is pointless since most those in this community who could have something to opine are now muted.

I would hope that those of you who are posting in Spanish don't defend the "speak the language of the community" rhetoric (i.e English in the US, Spanish in the DR) while at home and then come on to this thread do the opposite. What you are doing now is intensely hypocritical and rude.

Lu

Are you actually going to opine about the topic at hand? If not take your rant somewhere else where it is welcomed.

Send me another nasty pm and I will post it here too.

All I am saying is that some people can't participate because the thread is in Spanish. Nothing more and nothing less. I come on this board because I know everything is in English and I can read what people have to say in English. I'd like to participate and so would others, but how can they if the comments and responses are in Spanish. This is all I am saying. This isn't about being a moderator or my nationality. It's about allowing people to communicate in a language they are comfortable in.

As I see my request and opinions have fallen on deaf ears and have been taken lightly I will refrain from posting in this thread.

Cheers and good day to all,

Mr. Lu

Sorry, I thought you were a Mod. You should be! With lots of perks if you're multilingual.

I don't think it's rude. I think it's reality. People sit on the margins of democracy. Some are excluded, some people through their in ability to express their ideas can't participate. Others try to acculturate or integrate and participate fully in the DR. Some have voices, some don't. For sure there is power with language ask any immigrant who can't speak the language.

This reminds me of many political discussions I had in the past with Greeks, Chileans, Uruguayans Canadian, French Canadians, Portugese, Cypriots, Iranians, Iraqis where you could hear 3 or more languages being spoken around a table on this very subject. Very inclusive. But someone always made an attempt at translation.

I honestly thought rtejeda's post which had a rough translation was a good attempt at drawing in Spanish speakers who lurk and read from the margins while "foreigners" discuss their homeland. Personally I think it's interesting... even if rtejeda is some sort of sock puppet...

As for the use of Spanish, I don't see how anyone can contribute to a discussion on democracy in the DR if they don't read the press, media, policies etc. usually in Spanish. I don't think many people are sidelined... I suspect they don't like rtejeda or they don't find the topic interesting. I could be wrong. I'm just sitting on the sidelines, adding my 2 cents from the lofty towers of Yonge and Bloor in Toronto.

I think it would be added value on this site to have a section where Spanish could be used. Who knows maybe it would draw in more Web site visitors and advertisers. Chi ching! Maybe it would contribute to integration for foreigners living in the DR, maybe it would bring Spanish speakers into contact with that community and bring about fresh thinking for all participants on the topic of democracy in the DR.

The English version of my reaction, is my opinion:

The reality is that each head is a world and there are some who close their world to those who do not speak "English". The irony is that Dominican Republic is the land of the Dominicans and our official language is "Spanish". No way around it. Luv ya!
