Retiring Generals? Involuntary? $$? Pensions?
President Fernandez has recently seemingly involuntarily "retired" 10 - 15 - 20 generals; @ 3 months after his re-election?
* If these generals were inadequate, or worthy of dismissal, why " retire" them?
* As a public service, should not the Gov't also announce:
* 1. How old each retired general is;
* 2 What the amount of his annual pension will be; subject to future increases? Fringe benefits?
* 3. Will the now vacant positions of the retired generals be filled?
* 4. Are there competitive exams for these jobs?
* 5. Of each of the retired generals, how many other family members remain on the DR Gov't payrolls? Names? Ages? Compensation? Job titles?
Should not the collective press ask these questions? Food for thought.

I think Gringosabroso is asking rhetorical questions to make a point, which is both valid and effective.
If the president was doing something other than placating the press with this announcement of retirements after so much negative publicity, than he probably should be somewhat more forthcoming. Retiring a few generals to a life of relative comfort is hardly a solution to the massive problems facing the military.
By answering questions before they are asked, a leader can demonstrate the level of transparency that is needed by any effective government in a true democracy.
And incidently, asking questions is a good way to stimulate positive critical thinking. One does not have to get the answers for the questions to be beneficial. Gringosabrosos' questions obviously made some of us think about what was really happening with these retirements and the situation that lead to them.

Unfortunately, none of those questions will ever be answered, unless you know someone high up in the Armed Forces.
Each general will have 5 or 7 members of the armed forces at his beck and call for the rest of his life...sort of like menservants, butlers, chauffeurs, gardeners, cattlemen, whatever the general needs...also a car and driver...plus fuel plus access to certin "stores"....
A good life for sure. Remember, Soto Jimenez, former Minister of the Armed Forces, who never got a paycheck for more than RD$40,000 as a general, signed divorce papers giving his ex-wife RD$150,000 per month, and then had a sumptuous wedding out in Casa de Campo for a few hundred of his closest friends...and then founded his own political party...so he was really poor, I guess....

he he
HB,
sounds like they really get send to poverty, lol.
would be interesting to know 'how' they survive out there in the cold.
specially it would be interesting to know why they get retired.
if they reached the age for a retirement, o.k.
if they are too young for that there should be a explanation why they get send to the bright side of life that early, maybe 'cause they are very good friends with the president. if they get retired because of some behaviors which made it impossible for the armed forces to keep them in their posistions they should just get fired for exactly that and forget about Jeepetas, free gas, butler, gardener, driver aso.
good thread

One problem is too many generals in the first place for a population of 9.2 million. Absurd.
