Are you listed in " La nominilla " ?
He never will be compared with president Balaguer. Balaguer only can be compared with Juan pablo Duarte.
Read my cosin's book " La tercera republica, la de Balaguer " .

That's blasphemy...

Duarte is a hero...a guy who gave it all for his ideas, Balaguer was a power hungry manipulator and murderer. Where's the comparison?

In 1968 after the civil war the DR. was totally destroyed, Balaguer was the man who had the cojones to put everything in order againg and he was the the person who made of DR a safe and democratic contry.

And the name of the book is " La cuarta republica la de Balaguer "

I was here during the last few years of his presidency and it was a very safe country. Sh*t hit the fan as soon as he pulled out and these "greedy pussies took over" Same crap happened in Haiti when BabyDoc left. (Back to the DR) In Balaguer days, you could leave your house door unlocked and no one would even think of going in to "steal" your stuff. You could walk the streets without fear. He's my man and the one of most Dominicans who remember.

Frank,
Let's do the math.

Leonel first 8 years plus another 8 at the end of 2012
That is already 16 years, more than half Trujillo's 30 years.

This is the way it will unfold.
2012-2016 who knows?
Leonel 8 more years 2016-2024
2024-2028 Who knows?
2028-2036 Leonel again.

Believe me the only thing that would prevent
this from happening would be his death.

Granted, sometimes it feels like a violent, oppressive dictator might not be a bad thing, especially when crime is out of control.
Be warned, if you happen to find find yourself on the wrong side of one, you will have more trouble than you can deal with and no system to redress the balance.
Democracy sucks in a lot of countries. In my humble opinion, democracy and freedom are not interchangeable words.
Freedom is being able to feed, house, and clothe your family - and walk the streets without fear. Build a life and a business and sleep soundly at night.
Democracy, especially a young democracy, seems to be about voting for your ''tribal elders" once every four years.
No system is perfect, but if you do yearn for a Dictator with powers strong enough to fix the D.R's ills, you had better make sure you end up with a benevolent one.
Balaguer, for many who died at his hands before and after he was President, was very much not benevolent.
I think i would love to see the team of Leonel and Candelier taking the bull by the horns for several years to come.
