The Central Bank while appointed by the Government has to be very careful with those stats, remember we are in a Democratic country with strong commercial connections with various developed countries in the world, and if the CB is found to be tinkering with stats of that importance like the inflation rate, those commercial ties could go off in a NY minute. While DR has it shares of corruption in the government, DR still isn't North Korea.

Besides why in Earth would the PRD post a 42.7% inflation rate in December 2003 with the election just 5 months away?? maybe they were the honest guys lol

In 2004 I was all for a government change. In 2008 I was wiser and hoped for a change prefering MVM over Leonel for the simple reason: less governmentcontrol equals less damage. People offended me for this opinion. Where are we now ? If you are not a politician or a druglord life is getting worse every day.
Sometimes I really wonder how stupid foreigners can be eating up all these lies spilled by the LF government.
Wow, sounds like some people got their orientation to DR politics from a raging white-and-blue-clad donya at the colmado freshly brainwashed after a political rally. Looks like most of the folks on this thread agree (and hope/pray) that the PRD won't be back in the chair come 2012. Why? Maybe because there's no chance we're going to get our name on any government payroll and we don't want any disgusting packaged pork either. Most of the come solo sympathizing extranjeros on here are educated people who come from developed countries and have a more objective perspective on politics and progress.

Ideologically, the PRD would be my preferred party. In practice, they are a nightmare surpassed in horror only by a quirky troll man who throws money and food to poor people in the street so they can fight for it like dogs. Past scandals and bungles of the PRD have marred the party's image and the country's progress, and enough time hasn't passed to clean it up or for people to forget. It's not going to happen by 2012.

LF might be another ladronazo of a different breed because he conceeds to let those around him steal in return for support. Since Guillermo won't ever get elected, it's best to pick the one who steals the least I suppose. He has a respectable academic and professional background. Better yet, he doesn't make blatently racist and sexist comments to the press. Look up "hipolitadas" on youtube.com for a good laugh.

The metro might not be edible but it will be there for years to come to the benefit of the millions who will ride it in a year and save a lot of time and money. The food that could have been purchased with that money, however, would have long been decomposed in the bottom of a letrine, right down there in the hole beside the PRD.

Default I see it this way.

Would you rather be robbed by an idiot or a smart man?
Those are the choices available. The idiot is just an idiot while the smart man does some good things.

So the idiot will just rob you and call you names or beat you up in the process, whereas the smart man will try to justify it to you with some theories, numbers, etc...The end result though is that regardless of how it went you still got robbed...but I guess if you don't have a choice...

Default Not yet 2011

Mis panas (excepting the lambones, who will always be PRD) were mainly LF supporters in the last election. But most are now free agents. Dissatisfied. Not because of "come solo" (or come anything else) but because of high consumer prices and lack of jobs.

They will consider MVM if he can separate himself from the PPH in their eyes. My impression is that the PRD has not been stagnant. They may be capable now of projecting a more polished image.

That said, there is a lot of time left for LF to change things around - Which he would be interested in doing only if the PLD candidate is Margarita Cedeno. I would be amazed, though, if a turnaround can happen if he continues to sink such a large percentage of his disposable funds into the Metro black hole. In fact, I think the Metro may have tied his hands.

On the one hand, I think LF was the only RD politician who could have pulled the Metro off (if the PRD wins, you'll see what I mean). But it was ill advised despite its usefullness. Other transportation solutions would have been wider in scope and geography, would have been more cost effective, and would have created more jobs.
